I need to buy a remanufactured transmission. My Ranger is an 88 GT with the 2.9. I've seen conflicting information on whether this has an the Mitsubishi or Mazda built transmission. There are limited pictures available online to compare it to. Visually how can I tell which it is?
Thanks!

If it has a pan you can unbolt on the bottom it is NOT an M5OD-R1(M5R1), M5R1 is serviced from the top

1988 2WD Ranger GT should have the M5R1, but could have an FM-132, I would change it to an M5R1

2.9l and 4.0l used the same block bolt pattern, so an M5R1 up to 1997 from a 2.9l or 4.0l 2WD would work for you, 1998 and up don't have speedometer cable hook ups
M5R1 has integrated bellhousing, doesn't come off, so an M5R1 from 2.3l or 3.0l won't work, only 2.9l or 4.0l will work

Pictures of Ranger manual transmissions seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.shtml
