M/Ts or Winter treads?

Hankook makes EXCELLENT snow tires. But any MT or AT that Hankook makes is absolute garbage in the snow. I've driven with both the Dynapro AT and MT, both are horrible in the snow and the MT wears FAST. I also drove around on some Hankook Winter iPikes that were excellent studded.

The rubber compound makes the difference with a true winter tire, it stays soft and grippy when temps drop. Normal rubber does not.

I've got Duratracs on my superduty for winters, they are ok for a crossover type tire.

I've got Firestone winterforces on my Sport Trac and Dean Wintercats on my Ranger for winter, both studded. They are dedicated winters, and are much better when the temps drop than the duratracs on compact snow conditions.

This is the tread pattern on those Nexen Roadians. Handled the 10" of snow on the roads saturday and the 3" today like a boss.

Lol. Maybe you are a shit driver but I have no issues whatsoever with my hankooks in the snow. And 10" is nothing bud. If you think that's deep snow.... Well, it's not. No kidding those things handled it well. Its barely any snow at all. This morning going home the highways were straight ice. Saw 5 cars in the ditch. Pulled 2 of em out. I had zero problems with my hankooks mt's that you say are garbage in winter. I say its the driver.

10" is probably fairly deep for Koda in his 2wd.

If you think you are such a good driver with MT's just think how awesome you would be with decent winter tires...

Anybody try the Nokian Hakkapeliitta snow tires? They seem to get some pretty good reviews.
They kinda look like the snow version of GY Aquatreads.

In fact about two years ago I picked up a set of those off craigslist because $100 set of four brand new 255/60R16. Best buy for my brother, as I have still never used them on my trucks but he has used them going on two winters now on his 2wd Ranger and he follows me everywhere. Of course with a lot more tire spin but those tires get the job done.

I think they would be just plain silly on a 4wd pickup because of the superior traction they get on just a 2wd.

Another awesome snow tire is the General Altimax. Scored a set of four of those brand new in 255/60R16 as well of craigslist for $150. Some lady thought they would fit her Lumina. Those made it onto my other brothers 2wd Ranger and they perform I think better than the Nokians.

Indeed. But then I'd be getting stuck every other day on the back roads. No thanks.

Nokian makes fantastic tires all around, their winters are top notch.

Well now, somebody's awfully defensive about his hankook tires. :)

Compared to any other tire I've seen, the hankook mt's have handled the worst in the snow. The fact that you think you're the god of winter and that everyone else is a shit driver if they don't like your tires has nothing to do with it. You come off like another one of those young drivers that think they're the only ones who know how to drive.

lol

I've never been stuck on a back road in my Ranger. Must be the shit driver. :icon_twisted:

How many of your back roads drift in with 2-3 feet of snow every other day?

Depends on how far into winter we are. I live out in the middle of nowhere in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.

I would hope an MT tire could get through 2-3ft of snow. This thread has gone pretty far off track. 2-3ft of snow will not be found on any road around Chicago except for blizzard conditions, and no one is on the road then anyway. Plus a 2wd truck wont be ripping through that much snow with any tire.

A set of snow tires in Chicago will get through far more than any set of MT tires siped or not. Nothing compares to a snow tire on packed snow/ice and slick lightly plowed roads.

We get that you love your hancocks, hanjobs, hankooks, whatever they are but this thread is not about you. Im sure everyone is very pleased that you have found the superior tire for every situation and are an experienced driver past anyone elses abilities but again this thread is not about you. Lets help out the OP in their situation and not our own.

Between Snow tires and Mud Terrains siped or not snow tires will perform better and be safer to rely on in a Chicago winter environment. The better overall option for safe winter performance and light off roading year round would be just a simple all terrain tire.
