I lost oil pressure while driving a couple few days ago. Shut off engine within 30 seconds of seeing oil can light and hearing tapping. Dropped panel and found these pieces (photo) in rear of it. The smaller of the two pieces in the upper right was stuck in pickup tube past screen.
These are bits from the rear chain cassette, right?
(133k miles, see signature)

They are chain guides of some sort, hard to tell if they are from the front or rear timing chain. Either way, I'd be pulling the engine out and tearing down.

I think the oil pressure was lost because the long piece was in the well right beneath the pickup and was being sucked up against the screen. Just a theory.

So it has been a while. (Driving the company truck)
I have it tore down. The right cassette/guide was completely shredded.
The crank to jackshaft tensioner was busted up and laying in the bottom.
Some plastic guide bits even made it into the filter. Nifty.
And then there is the sludge.......

I have pictures of it all but honestly, who hasn't already seen this. :annoyed:

At least you caught it in decent time. I assume you run synthetic oil? I bet there isnt any internal damage if so. Ive seen those 4.0s run for up to three hours with busted oil pans and no oil but the little bit of synthetic that stayed stuck to the parts.

Good practice is to change tensioners/guides at 100,000 mile intervals regardless of engine condition. Its way to comon to see vehicles with OHC engines on a second or third engine with only 150-200k on it because of this.

I bought it 01-12. Changed oil first thing. I use motorcraft syn-blend for everything, 6k-7.5k. Drive 65-75 a week. No galling.

I've seen it, but I love carnage and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Here are some more photos. Enjoy.

Haven't seen the pump drive rod break off like that before.

Me either.
Better that than wiping a gear on the jack-shaft.
There where about 3 more small pieces of glorious guide material.
