Right so my truck has even since i owned it had a bad ignition switch/key cylinder I'm wanting to replace that whole deal with a toggle switch and a momentary on switch for the starter. why not just replace the parts you ask? well I'm on the 2nd set of those two parts and its very annoying having to have the switch duck taped tight so it works an having to constantly fiddle with that or the key so i can get my gauges to work or my wipers to function. then theres that small issue where if i bump the area just right i kill the engine while moving:annoyed: so boys whats your thoughts and or ideas maybe a how to if there is one.

BTW this was wrote when i just got off working all night with no sleep since Sunday so if this all makes no sense an just sounds stupid and half ass-ed lemme know :icon_thumby:

why not replacing it with another ignition cylinder?? would be easier and painless. seems like if u add a toggle switch it must have all the wiring so all the stuff works when ignition is ON.
maybe a panel for several toggle switches??
one for ignition, one for electric accesories ? like a nascar car, several toggles for all the functions...

well i had replaced the one in it but it too dont work and i think i read some where AllenD had said its better to just replace the whole steering coulm then the innards. what i think is wrong with it is that it hangs upside down and the part that moves to make contact with the spots on the switch when the lil rod from turning the key comes apart from the spot where they contact. i like your nascar toggle switch panal idea!

i was just gonna suggest replacing the steering column... not very hard to do and you should be able to get one from a yard for a fair price. just get one with a key :icon_thumby:

i just may have to do that... if i can find one... they crushed alot of cars and trucks up here when steel was high.
like i said lack of sleep leads to odd things an ideas

Edit:while that would be alot easer then the idear but if i had that kinda starting system it would keep the supid people from wanting to drive/steal it

what you could do is get a key cylinder off of a rider mower or a removable switch to stop the power to the rest of the switches but as you turn the key/flip the switch you can run all of the other switches.
kinda like a key but more complicated :icon_twisted:

found a write up while lookin for the parts:
It really isn't as difficult as it is tedious.

The project should start with, get a wiring/ schematic of the electrical system for your bronco.

You need to buy the switches, one will be a multiple pole, single throw toggle switch. You will use it to turn on the accessories and ignition systems.

The switches need to be DC rated at least 25A DC. @ 12-24V

the second switch will need to be a double pole, single throw, with a spring return to off/normal. This switch will be the start switch and one of the poles will turn the accessories off during starter operation.

from there it is mount the switches in the same configuration as the original key operated switch except splitting out the start circuit.

It is actually easier to do with three switches
accessories switch, ignition and engine controls switch and then the start switch. and less wiring.

The three switch procedure:
Turn the ignition to on, then start, press start to turn over the engine, then after the engine is started, release the start switch and turn on the accessories.

Get a schematic and go to it.

Your key is useless except to unlock the steering column.
You can remove this feature by taking out the linkage in the lock.
hows this sound?
as far as some of the parts needed i can source a few from my Fire Dept random stuff box

ok i found this but im not sure how to translate it and get the wires sorted out

Another idea

Hello,

Perhaps You might be best to simply move the key switch. I have seen in a friend's Saab that the key switch was in the console. If the key goes down to make contact, that would possibly remedy the issue You're currently having. It might also be easier in that you would just have to isolate the two wires for the key switch and re-route them to a new location. Or just get a remote start and say to heck with the whole dealio.

heres the switch an a pic so if your not sure of what im refering to.

the Red arrows show the area where the two parts meet where inside the switch slides.

the Green shows where it sits where it should be. BTW it needs the duck tape pulling it up holding it to keep it there without falling from a bump.

the yellow line shows where that yellow edge drops when the duck tape lets it slip down. it slips just enough to move around that if pulled down at all it will die when pushed up it will allow the gages to go back on

just replace the column...

sure it would be 'cool' to have a bunch of switches but its gonna be easier and safer both to just put a column in it.

yeah thats what i most likly will do just gotta find the parts truck for one as this is out of my current part truck. it works just fine with that tape til it lets go there a way to more firmly hold that up there?

just replace the switch. i had that happen on my 84 once.

that would be the best option, but if u still wanna go nascar style :D
u need the wiring diagram, to see what wires do what and hook em to the switches

just replace the switch. i had that happen on my 84 once.

i think the switch itself is still good just the tabs and such that hold it in place are bad. would a new one snap in there better and hold?
