Looking for info on a 300 swapped Ranger

If there is a list I am not on I wanna know about it...

There is a list of women I would like to date. You do not qualify for that list. Not by a long shot. Now you know about that list that you're not on.

Tons of good ideas so far.

Apparently the 300 has a DGAF attitude about boost. They seem to seriously not care if it has any, and quite a few trucks I was reading about have been tuned via listening for detonation while under boost. ?

The only recommendation I've read so for for applying a turbo or two is "high volume oil pump." That's it. Literally nothing else.

Also, remember this is a "budget, DGAF build" radiators, intercooler, battery, used tractor stacks, etc in the bed? Cool. Budget diy homebrew lift, and hockey puck body lift? Awesome. Speed limit sign as a fender patch? Now you're just talking dirty to me.

Screw truck nuts. Let me grab some wellhead nuts from work and hang them from a piece of tow chain from the bumper.

Someone just posted these pics in a 73-79 F-series group on Facebook... I figured you'd like to see it.

Overall, turbos seem like a bad choice for a 300 engine. Mainly due to the engine not wanting to be revved that high. You'd have to source some turbos that spool immediately, right off idle. Otherwise it's gonna end up building boost right as it's time to shift, doing you zero good. You'll be wringing the engine out 100% of the time trying to keep it in an rpm range where the turbos are actually being used to their potential.

Supercharging would make much more sense on that engine in my opinion. Unless you start with a block and build the entire engine for higher rpm use.

Seriously??

The 300 is perfect for a turbo application.

It is a low speed long stroke engine. Sure.....It will be an inefficient compared to diesel mpg vs load. But the properly matched turbo map make this engine a magnitude greater for 300 cubes.

for a gas engine it will be quite efficient power to dollar to economy.

Geared to its ability it will make great numbers at 6 Psi. A supercharger is good but the turbo is actually more expansive due to the engines already steady idle power. It don't need the supercharger low end gain.

A few hundred to diy garage turbo....that will embarrass the thousands to make a supercharged application with belt drive complications. Yeah I would be in the turbo camp.

That said Rusty is as full of shit on the 300 vs 302 stock to stock combo as the 460 vs psd stock to stock combo.

That is in real terms of exceptions vs the rule. This one time the x beat y is fine....but not the regular.

This coming from the guy that knows every part that went into the winningest 300 street stock car at.flatrock speedway. Which my dad built....

But that is an exception....

A stock 300 still doesn't want to be revved over 4000rpm. A turbo isn't going to help that.

The 300 is a slug. Period. No argument about that here.

Stock the 300 is a boat anchor because it lacks the actual horsepower and torque to gear it so it can move fast with the 4k ideal range. They are fawking slower then smoke off shit....but get it done. Barely. They are amazing to those of us from yesteryear because they do menial work that a 2 liter effortlessly does now.

The qsx Cummins on my rig don't like going over 1800 rpm and the turbo works swimmingly for some reason...2400 foot pounds.

You map the turbo to the application. Pretty simple for a 300...like more then double the tq situation. So 331 gears on 235 / 85 tires would out tow any normal 410 gear 300 application trans to trans and still unladen cruise at triple digit speeds of one so desired. Something a stock 300 will not do. Sub 300 foot pounds is exactly that.....nutless.

The Ecoboost platform is a low speed under sized situation as well. Making maximum power from idle to 5k is the goal with Ecoboost...with the sweetspot at 2200 ish. Of course with variable valve events they are much better at it. If you put vvt on a 300 with a turbo I would want one.

It makes no difference what rpm an engine makes its power at, you just change that with gearing. All that matters is the the magnitude of the power and the shape of the power curve.

Ok first off no rusty is not full of shit.

Please explain how two engines within 20CI of each other, one making 410ftlbs@2200 and the other making 415ftlbs@2000 is going to have any real notiable difference towing assuming both are geared the same. Just cause ones diesel? Youve been breathing to much smoke man.

As for the 300 vs 302, in two similar trucks a 300 WILL beat a 302 for a short time off the line, the difference becomes even more dramatic with a load. Ive seen it happen numerous times.

Also, no, the 300 is not a "slug" that 2.0s nowadays can outwork.

You seriously think a 2.0 could survive in a 26,000GVW dump truck? No it couldnt.

The 300 is a far superior truck engine to the 302. Period.

Would i want one in a foxbody? No. Just like i dont want a 302 in my F series.

I have towed the same load in the same conditions time and again. 460 down to second gear and 50 mph where psd unlocked converter and was gaining speed in 3rd. You go ahead and look at numbers and don't follow the Dynamics. The numbers are good...but the application is not the same.

A mild build 302 makes more power at every point in the curve over a 300. Following your comparative with the 460 vs psd it should be better or negligible compared to a 300.....when doing actual work..

but the 302...it feels weaker....yet tests stronger.

The Ecoboost 2 liter will embarrass all engines available in 80,s trucks....and turbo 4 whizzer's of the era.

So yeah....in this context comparo?.. full of sheeeeit.

Id be more then willing to put my 460 against any stock PSD of the 94-97 era. Period end of story. The 460 will tow just as good as a PSD and totally dust one empty. Im not argueing this further.

Why are we comparing a mild 302 to a stock 300? Thats fair. A 302 *might* have a chance against a 300 if you give it a good gearing advantage (like, 3.08s for a 300 vs 3.73 for a 302), and on the expressway yes ill give it to a 302 regardless.

Ill bet a 300 makes considerably more torque then a 302 off idle and up to 2500 or so RPM. Yes the 302 has a good HP advantage, but torque they are about equal (265 vs 275) and the 300 builds it much, much sooner. I tried to find charts but was unsucessful.

.....and cmon you know HP dont mean alot for gettin shit moving. There are semis running around at 80k gross with 425hp. You think a mustang coyote would haul an 80k rig as well? No it wouldnt.

Also, yes there might be turbo 2.xL engines with the same (or more) power then a 300/302/351, but will they work their dicks in the dirt day in and out and not go boom? Doubtful.
