you have the 2.8 so... the 4.0 swap's not that easy for you.

you could do a carb'ed 302 swap tho.
 
Ive seen someone around my area bolt in a Mercedes diesel engine and tranny to their 2wd ranger and they got quite a bit of power and like 25-30mpg
 
by the way, another cheap lift is coil spacers and extending your rear-end blocks (add a 2" piece of steel on top of the stock block)

Exactly what I've been thinking, though I'd just buy the 4" blocks.. stacking blocks is never a good idea to me, things can go bad.
