I was just wondering when the last 2.3 engine was used in the Ranger 4x4! I have a 1996 2.3 4x4 but I modified the front frame and installed the Front diff and transfer case my self! Were the 1996 trucks ever available with 2.3 and 4 wheel drive!

They were available through '97, not very common but they were available.

1997 was the end of the 2.3l Lima engine in Rangers, 2WD or 4WD

Yes, I think 1997 would be the last official year of a 4x4 Ranger with 4cyl engine.

1998 was the start of 3rd generation Rangers, 2.3l was dropped and a 2.5l was use as the 4cyl engine until mid-2001, then the DOHC 2.3l duratec engine was used until 2012.

I have read about a few 4cyl 4x4 Rangers after 1997 but strictly anecdotal reports, never seen one in person.
I would think if you paid, Ford would build it like you wanted, but no off-the-shelf 4cyl 4x4s after 1997

Ok guys thanks I was just wondering because I never seen one after 1992
With a 4 cylinder and 4 wheel drive!

Just a question, when you say you modified the front frame yourself to put the front diff on, did you swap crossmembers or were you able to get the 2wd engine crossmember to work with the Dana 35 TTB axle?? Curious on how you did it and if you can post pics of it. Thanks!

You pretty much have to swap cross members. The way the beams attach is very different, and the frame pieces are built very differently because of it,

I know that, that's kinda why I'm curious what he did. If he some how did it with out swapping cross members I'd be curious to see how it was done, because I've only seen it done by swapping.
