Largest tire you can put on a 2019 Ford Ranger without a lift

Looking to give your 2019 Ford a ranger more aggressive look with a new set of tires?

We were out of town at a hotel when I wrote the above post about mpg's. On the drive home in our Ranger I began to question the wisdom of putting oversized tires on a truck with stock ride height if you live in a climate that gets ice and snow. Not an issue for Jim in Texas... but for sure an issue for us here in the mountains of Colorado.

Our FX4 has the stock OEM tires, and stock ride height.

We drove 90 miles on our journey back home. About 30 miles in some truly crappy heavy snow and slush, another 50 miles in temperatures that were in the teens, then another 10 miles in temp's that were in the mid to upper 30's. Since it was above freezing we headed for the car wash before going home. I'd much rather leave the filth there than in my garage.

I noticed a rubbing sound coming from the front end when turning and knew it was probably ice build up.

Sure enough when I got out at the manual car wash their was about 3" of ice built up. Of course the rear wheel well wasn't an issue, but the front was basically an ice mold that surrounded the front tires.

Seems like it could do some damage at some point if the ice got thick enough and with over sized tires it wouldn't take much build up at all to be an issue..

I wish I would have taken pictures of all the above.... maybe next time.

I ran across similar on an SUV I used to own. A lift was definitely needed to avoid ice and snow build up.

Im getting these tires and the lift installed on March 2! I'll post some picks when it's done :)

Nice… be sure to stop back in and show us what it looks like!

I wanted those mud terrains to claw through snow in Colorado.

Yesterday, I got these tires and a 2 1/2" level lift installed . I couldn't be happier! Thanks to @ZeusOffRoad in Burnsville Minnesota for the great work!

Truck looks great. Can you post more photos of the truck and its upgrades? Where did you get the decals?

I'd like to add this as a front page feature.

Interesting to know. The speedometer inaccuracy things is a generalization and I imagine it varies from model to model.

I can’t even remember where I read the article in the subject. Probably a car magazine but I wouldn’t put it past Consumer Reports either.

The general premise behind it is that if the speedometer is reading a bit fast, there is less chance of a person getting busted for speeding, ergo less chance of a customer going after the vehicle manufacturer over an inaccuracy. Speedometers are required to meet a certain accuracy but there is an allowable +/- tolerance. Manufacturers tend to make their speedometers read a little fast as a result.

According to phone GPS, my digital speedo with stock tires is accurate. But I don't leave that up on the screen. The huge analog gauge that makes a digital display superfluous reads about 2 MPH low at highway speeds. Temp gauge also reads low, fwiw. (Sorry for the tangential first post.)

I’ve found with my 2019 that it reads about 1 mph fast compared to what the GPS is telling me. 69 mph on the speedometer when the GPS is saying 70.

My 2011 reads about 2 mph fast compared to the GPS with the stock 235/75R15 tires.

The stock tire size from trim level to trim level is different in overall diameter with the various tire and wheel combinations from the factory. So, results are going to vary.

The above post you replied to is a basic generalization that was found looking at the general brands as a whole. So, again, there are going to be some variances.

My speedo is off by about 2mph (reading low). At 45 it's more like 1 1/2 off and at 75 it's about 2 1/2 off. I need to do the programming modifications with ForScan soon to adjust it but from what I have been reading it might be a bit tricky to do so that the computer doesn't throw error codes.

Just keep in minds that, that variance isn’t linear across the speed ranges (as you may have noted with your post). If you are going to fiddle with it, calibrate it at the speed you will most often travel.

Even with a 2.5” level, it still looks to have a decent rake to it. Why is that? 2.5 should have brought it up even? I’m looking into the MaxTrac 2.5 level with 1.5” spacers on 265/70’s. I definitely want mine level with little to no rake though.

It's the clearance between the side wall and the upper arm and knuckle that is the limiting factor. You might be able to tweak that some with a wheel with a shallower backspacing but one has to be careful with that because of potential bearing wear issues and tires poking outside the wheel wells. Some states have laws concerning thread extending past the fenders.

My 2019 Ranger is the same color as your's and I have been looking to put the hood stripes and the tailgate letter inlays on mine but I can't decide what color to use. What color did you go with?

That truck looks really nice. I am glad I read this forum. I was going back and forth between doing the extra work/mods to put on 285/70/17r or sticking with 265/70/17r. After reviewing this thread, I decided to go with the 265/70/17r Ridge Grapplers with the Ford Performance Leveling Kit w/Fox Shocks and couldn’t be happier. I also feel it is less wear on the truck versus a 33inch tire.
I went off roading in mud and sand two different weekends so far and the Ranger handled everything well.
I just added the Yakima Outpost HD Truck Rack with side bars and Recovery Board Mounts.
And I bought some white knuckle off road DOM rock sliders that should be here in about 4 weeks, so I can be more confident with some tougher rock climbing.
