Hey guys. I bought a FerrariOne Laptop by Acer...

http://www.acer.com/ferrarione/

I know it doesn't have the sweetest specs but I'm going to school next year and I just need it for like...taking notes and playing music...and it looks sweet and I got it all for $280 CAN. It does need a new battery tho, but still...I'm not complaining...Anyways heres the deal

-It came with Linux
-I want windows 7 ultimate
-it has no cd/dvd drive

So heres what I'm doing, I'm downloading windows 7...then I am going to put it on a USB...then do I just get it to boot for the usb? Its an .iso file.

I have built a gaming pc from scratch before so I know my way around computers somewhat.

Thanks for any help!

Super easy to do. But, you need to do it from a computer running 7.

Can be done from an XP computer, but seems to me you need to use other software, etc etc..

This article is on a few sites, but here's one link. <Linky>

Just follow the steps carefully. Works great. My netbook also has DVD drive and I'm always switching it around from ubuntu to 7 to XP, to whatever...

Thanks man...also what do you mean I need to do it from a computer running 7? Do what? Haha

Also...on the side note...how do you get a link to say linky! I have never figured out how people rename links haha

Edit: After reading the article again you mean I have to do everything they say up until it says: "One you type the command in and press enter you will see all of the files being copied, just wait till it is completed and you will have a bootable Windows 7 flash drive!"

So I do all that stuff on my computer with windows 7...then plug that bootable usb into my laptop?

I'm sorry but I have to ask. When you have a computer that is running linux, why on earth would you want to install any form of windows on it?

Haha well...brand loyalty? I dunno...I've just always had windows...I like it. And with putting a new OS on it I can whip all the previous owners stuff off and start from scratch. Linux confuses me having never used it before

Yep, just open a command window, and type the commands, one by one.

You may or may not have to go into your laptop bios and enable booting from USB.

And for a hyperlink, just copy a website address, hilight whatever text you want to link in the text box, and click the globe with the chain LINK. ("Insert Link") Paste the full address in the spot provided, and it'll link that highlighted text to the web address...

linux generally takes the master boot record for itself.
to rewite it for windows, i use a 98se boot floppy
and do "fdisk /mbr". this works for sata drives too,
tho i don't know why. the bios must take care of it.

When doing an instal where there is any "Strange" partitioning (like a Linux File allocation table or a Dell factory restore partition) I will take the drive and use theWindows install disc format the drive.

Delete ALL partitions first, then create a system partition 40gb is adequate
but for 7 I like 50gb.

Isolate your data from the system.

There should be an option in the bios to allow you to enter setup and choose
boot device priority and typically on notebooks a USB device is an option.

Just use a USB DVD drive...

Umm...I'm a noob. Haha. I don't care if all data is lost off the laptop. Its the guy whos I got it from, so it can be lost. Can I just follow the article? Also how do I get to BIOS...on my desktop you just press f1 or whatever but on the linux laptop theres no screen that shows up presenting options to go to BIOS

There is always some way to get to the Bios or setup
screen, try F2, Del, F8, F10 etc....

I ran into an issue when I tried to put 7 on my older Dell, it wouldn't accept 7 because the optical drive was IDE, not SATA. That may or may not be an issue for you since you don't have an optical drive.

Ok thanks guys. On the side note where is the best place to get a battery for one of these bad boys? Directly thro acer?

AAHHHH HELP! I attempted to do it and all was well until it asked me where to install windows, disk 0 partition 1 or 2 I believe and it couldn't install on either because the format wasn't NTFS. HELP!

I would make sure you have all the drivers on a flash drive or something similiar before you format, but you will have to erase the partitions and create a new one and format it in ntfs instead of the file system that was setup when you were running linux.

Erase the partitions on the linux laptop? I think it had an option to do that. But the "new" one couldn't be selected
