Language pet peeves- list yours too

It's not just here it's EVERY fourm on the net. People type "then" rather than "than" -it runs me nuts. Go on YOUTUBE and watch some old SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK! And no more ending a sentence with a preposition either! (example: "I am going to the store ,would you like to come WITH ?" )

I’m a spelling champ by no means, but the thing I dislike most would have to be when people write a whole paragraph as if they were a 15 year old text messaging their best bud! Now, acronyms and abbreviations are fine with me but words like cuz, 2NTE, L8R and LOL are just ridiculous in my mind and will probably be used more and more with each passing generation!

Most people in America have stopped paying attention by 3rd grade. Or they figure it's the net so no body cares.

I've actually seriously considered sending letters to the administration of the school district where my wife went to 1st through 5th asking for a refund because her grammar is terrible and I'm not having to teach her at age 24 things she should have known by age 10.

yeah it can be annoying, but then i remember i'm reading a post by john smith, not a george orwell novel. it's unfortunate, but some people are just idiots.

my wife hates it when i use bad grammar, so naturally, i do it all the time around her

but here's my list:
-general word misspelling's, i mean this site underlines a word when it isnt spelled right
-effect/affect
-irregardless, no really, it isnt a word

This isn't a problem on TRS like it is on other forums, but I hate it when people put the dollar sign after the number - 15$

While it's often the bad spellers who do this, what makes it ridiculous is that it doesn't even have anything to do with spelling skills. I'll cut foreigners some slack, but there is absolutely no excuse for anyone born and raised in America to make this mistake. These people have never seen a dollar figure written that way in a retail store, online retailer, catalog, school, or anywhere else, yet people continue to screw it up.

Best of luck to those who write like that on a job application!

Another pet peeve is when people are reading and they come across words that are extremely easy to pronounce, and are used in common talk every day, and they pronounce it completely wrong. It shows how bad schools are really doing...

Oh, and another is when people call something "Stupid" and they completely butcher the word, ex: Stupied, Stoopid, etc etc, seems pretty ironic to me.

In my freshman English class in High School, there was a girl who couldn't read the word "read". She sat there and struggled with it for 3 minutes before I interrupted by repeatedly smashing my head on my desk.

This prompted the teacher to move me to a higher section.

Dont ask me why I put my $ at the end I have done it my entire life no idea why because I know its wrong but i did it for so long thinking it was right....

Master Hec0 is an example of what bad habits kids do when they're young, and teachers never bother to catch.

If someone has been making a mistake their whole life, but have also been slipping through the system for so many years... That just shows that teachers aren't paying attention.


I'm planning on being a Theater teacher, and one of the things that I KNOW I will be hard on in getting the students to learn is HOW TO READ AND UNDERSTAND EMOTION AT THE SAME TIME!

Everyone hates a boring reader... So, I'm going to make them work up to being better readers.
