Kyle M's Ranger Rebuild

Well, I have decided I am gonna go ahead and put the doubler in. I am starting on my rendition of the intermediate shaft this week. Still have a few things to figure out but I am pretty sure I have a good plan.

So your building your own intermediate shaft hey? Cool!

What are your plans on the shaft? Just curious how your doing it. I'm planning still, but not sure if I'm going that route yet.

It will be sorta like this, same idea anyway. My plan is to machine flats on the TC input, splined section, then machine a hexagon shape into the other part and press them together. I won't need to use dowels to hold it and I will use liquid nitrogen to get a real tight press fit. I hope this will work, I will post pictures.

I will ship you both pieces and pay you to make me an intermediate for a doubler.

might need one of those soon kyle ;)

I would be glad to make one for everyone, just wanna be sure it's gonna work before I agree to anything. You guys will be the first to know when something works!

Well, anyway I had my first set back today and basically ruined and good M5OD 2wd tranny and a mustang drive shaft......I cut the output shaft off the tranny and the slip yoke off the drive shaft to only find out after doing so they aren't the same as the input on the transfercase, so back to square one. Gotta locate a output shaft from a 4wd RBV tranny then I will be back in business

Well, the truck is under construction again, yanked the rear suspension out in prep of the inboarded 63's and the FW 8.8 swap. Should go pretty good, just not looking forward to setting up the gears again. Pulled the shafts from the 8.8 today to redrill them 5.5 x 6 pattern also, got lots of work ahead of me this week!

I also made a new rear drive shaft out of 2.5" poop pipe with a 1/4" wall, should be stout. To balance it, or true it up I tacked the yokes on and bolted it up to the truck the spun it with a indicator on it and got it within .020. I think the tube is a little out of round so I think it is almost perfect. We will see. I am going to have another one made so this will be my spare just in case since I have problems keeping them in good condition!

Oh one last thing, I am going to make a skid plate for the drive shaft and maybe one for the belly.

Why didn't you use square tubing so you will have 2 foot or so of slip yoke and balance that?? Good work so far, but uh....pics Kyle, Pics!!

How would you balance a square shaft? All though it would make a good spare, for multiple people since it would have so much slip!

Here are a few pictures of todays progress
