Koty's 91 Ranger Build Thread

thanks for the offer but im not even gonna take the time to fix this worn out 4 banger. its time for at least a v6 in her and thats just what i happen to already have.

anyway got most of my sensor wires labeled, and then pulled the driveshafts, tcase, and transmission on my truck yesterday. while also spilling atf from tipping the tranny on accident all over my workspace. aka my driveway lol. so i sprayed it all down, and called it a night. gettin a start. still need to do a little more reading up on the actual swap though

Basicly hook it all up in your truck as it is in the exploder. Fuel system should be fine too. As for shifting the automatic, you may need to use its steering colum and its dash but I think u may have the same dash so u may be good there.

everyone has said its easiest to splice the wires at the firewall connector to match up the different wires. i gotta see if the ecu will just plug in then or if i need to change anything there.

as far as the a4ld, im not gonna run that, im going to find me a manual hopefully next weekend at the jy. all im guessing i need to swap it to manual is the transmission and the manuals flywheel and possibly the starter if thats different, right?

You will also need a pilot bearing too and see if you can find a manual trans computer for a 4.0 that had the same emission stuff as your 4.0, some years didn't have egr valves and whatnot.

As for drive shafts, not sure about that either.

Just remembered, dont forget to swap rads as the 2.3 has different house locations and whatnot.

This swap should be interesting seeing as your truck is high in the air.

hmm so i will need the computer too? just as long as its the same year and looks all the same. what would happen if i kept the auto computer? just throw a code, bc a lot of people do manual swaps.

I say keep the auto computer and go from there. My old 2.3 FI that was last in my truck came out of an auto. Ran great but always had a weird serging thing to it.

Heres another thing. Now that you are putting a larger engine in, will your axle gearing need to be addressed or go much larger on the tires?

OK ill try it. If I change the computer if its needed, will I need a manual engine harness?. And for gears I'm just going to keep my plan. Deal with them until I can afford bigger rubber

A manual computer will hook to an auto during harness. I've seen a few guys do this when they did their 4.0 swap.

should have my hands on an engine hoist tonight but its raining today so probably wont work on it any. gonna be out of town tomorrow evening and ive been juggling this and replacing/repairing the ttb in a buddys f150 that ran up a rock wall, so ive been pretty busy.

hopefully by friday after work i can get my engine pulled and start removing parts from the explorer. then saturday im really hoping i can find a 4.0 5 speed at the local pick n pull to save some money. gotta get moving we only have 3 hrs that they are open then to do that and some other small stuff. ughh need more time

Got almost everything out of the way about to pick up an engine hoist and say goodbye for good to the 2.3!

Only had 2 4.0 manuals at the jy. One was bad so I hope this ones good. It didn't have any notes on it and the motor was already pulled.
