Knocking in driveline?

i am not sure. i would think that the 2wd regular cabs would have a longer drive shaft because they have no transfercase and would have a two piece shaft. if it were 4x4 then i would think that it would have a 1 piece drive shaft. can anyone shed some light on this?

2wds dont have a carrier bearing as far as i know. the 4x4s that had one were the ttb extended cab rangers.

as far as fixing the truck you can get new spiders and still do one wheel peal burnouts. i would weld it if you or someone you know has the skills to do it. if no one can weld it i would order a mini spool they are under 100 bucks. driving a locked rear is difficult to drive and isent for a moderatly skilled drivers or those who are easily shaken, they will do dougnuts on you in a split second in the rain or snow. if you dont like it you can always replace the spool with new spiders. if you weld it you usually have to replace the carrier as well.

PS you are one lucky kid my brother had a dakota that he side steped the clutch at the redline it regularly and when his went it took EVERYTHING with it, c-clips,spiders,ring and pinion.

when it broke, i was a hundred yards from my house, i stopped in the road(it was like midnight and it was the street i live on) and looked at the tires, cause it sorta sounded like a flat, and i looked under didn't see anything obvious, so i drove it home in 1st gear and that was it, im glad it happened so close to my house

if this is a daily driver, you dont want to weld it and a spool will be a waste of money. either do a locker, l/s unit or new spiders.

my 96 2wd extended cab had a carrier bearing that failed. what he was describing sounded exactly like what he described.

if thats the case then its the extended cabs with ttb that had a carrier bearing. my 86 standard cab dident and neither does my friends 89 4x4 standard cab.

you CAN spool it or weld it but a good ratcheting locker will also be unpredictable because they can lock because of excessive acceleration in a turn just like a spool or weld will. the diffrence is you can learn to drive with a mini spool or a welded diff and it can become predictable after you have driven a few miles in all the diffrent weather conditions in your area. if you are a good and skilled driver you will be fine with it welded or spooled. limited slips and lockers are expensive!

i think im a good driver, i have to deal with a 454 in a c-10 and it drives fine, only took it out in the rain once, but the s-10 is welded and i drive it all the time in the rain

How much can i expect to pay for new spiders?

Everyone thinks they are a good driver. If you haven't had a formal training course, you are WRONG.

I think it unlikely that only the spiders are bad. Look for ANY EVIDENCE AT ALL of ring or pinion gear chips. For a number of reasons, not the least of which is ingestion of that chunk. Also, the spiders are VERY difficult to break on an open diff without shocking the crap out of the R&P or ingesting something else. Any chips on the gearset that intersect the contact pattern mean the gearset is crap.

Also, one NEVER "just" swaps a carrier. If you don't adjust the backlash, you'll tear up the gearset.

Thanks, im new to this whole diff thing, never did ANY work to them, i gotta get that chunk out and look at better in the daylight, i was working in the dark last night.

My dad races, and he taught me how to drive well

How much $ am i looking at if i replace all the gears in the rear?
I think i have a 9" in an old econoline van in my back yard, but im not sure, i may put that in

i may weld it for a temporary fix until i can get the money to replace the diff gears, all or my other cars and trucks are posi, i think i can handle a little 2.9, LOL

Here's some other pics, can't really see anything though

I think (taken in context) he means that he knows how to handle a locked rear on the road. Many people don't know how to handle a rear spool. People who do know how may or may not have had formal training.

Chic N Stew: It looks like your R&P are fine from the pictures. If you weld the spiders and decide to go open again, you'll have to buy a new carrier and set the gears up again, which can be a lot of work or $$$.

I'd recommend buying a set of spiders at the yard for a few bucks and swapping them in. Be sure the keep the caps and shims on their respective sides when you remove the carrier or you'll loose your gear setup.

im just gonna do the welding myself, its just temporary until i can get to the junkyard, my grandpa has an old econoline van with the rear out and its a 9", i think i may eventually put that in there when i get my 351w in it

i have never personally welded a diff but i have heard of failures due to people using improper rods and other things so make shure you have assistance or atleast advice from someone who has sucessfully done it before. i still vote for ordering a mini spool or hunting down a posi rear.

i would probably pull that broken tooth chunk out and put it all back together and test drive it. for some reason i cant see that one broken tooth being much of a problem. on corners it may make some noise but other than that i dont see why not.... i still cant figure out how you broke one tooth on one spider gear without hosing the r&p
