hi . im helping out a guy in town to try and get his plow truck running again . anyway its a 1991 extra cab ford ranger with a 2.9l and a 5 speed . it will crank but won't fire . a friend told me he thought it is the knock sensor . i doubt it is . but i got to thinking and figured i'd go about testing it anyway . anyone by chance have a pic of the locaton of the sensor ? . im more familiar with the lima's and the 4.0s then the old 2.9s as far as sensor's go . anyway thanks for any info

It's the same as any other motor, you have to figure out first if you have spark, then if you have fuel, and go from there.

yep , i understand all of that , i was just looking to add to the pot of possible issue's i could test

I didn't think they had a knock sensor.
idk for sure , heres a link to rockauto's catalog with the listing of a ''knock sensor'' although the catalog could be wrong http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1137754,parttype,5108

I hope they do, I just picked one up and that means to me the ecu will/might have adaptive strategy for different octane ratings. I had an 86 and don't remember a knock sensor but that was a few years ago. Hopefully someone with definite knowledge chimes in.
I had a problem on my 91 4.0 in that I didn't have a connector making proper connection after black taping it after a motor swap. It took me a long time to figure it out. If I was more knowledgeable with electrical it would have been found in a couple of minutes....it took me months. Just a reminder to double check the connections.
good luck,

Richard

I know it isn't. The 2.9 stopped using knock sensors in 1988 because lifter chatter was setting off the sensor.

Check spark, check timing. Assuming you haven't been poking blindly and skipped fuel your problem is in one of those two spots.

I thought it had to do with the EGR gasses(?)

But definitely not knock sensor. Can you get it going on starting fluid? Start with checking for spark first, then check the fuel pressure if you have spark. If you have fuel pressure, then check for an injector pulse.
