Kind of a dumb question....

It's pretty simple really. It goes by which side of the vehicle is based off the driver seat. So a US spec vehicle and a Euro spec vehicle use the same part and # even though one is a driver side vs passenger side

And in your "this works in the US and that works in the UK" theory where does the LHD postal edition Jeep Cherokee fall?

EDIT: Yes, I had to.

In the same boat... You have a part that is used in multiple markets, by claiming it is Driver Side only or Passenger Side only makes it hard to standardize your parts warehouses globally. So from the driver seat (doesn't matter which side of the vehicle you sit in) you classify as it as Right or Left because it's the "drivers" side part in certain markets while it's a "passenger" side in others. Until it gets to something specific that was only available in a certain market(and only sold to said market) then the Left/Right thing makes sense.
Easiest thing to use this would be something like a Trim Bezel for the headlights, if you ordered a "left" part looking at the front of the truck and it comes in and is for the "right" side you feel like they shipped the wrong part. When in all actuality it's the correct part you ordered incorrectly.

But... the whole point is that you never order a part based upon “...looking at the front of the truck...” You determine left from right based upon your POV while sitting in the cab. Am I missing something here? :icon_confused:

You may be missing it completely... It doesn't matter which side of the vehicle that you drive from. Because as long as you are sitting in the vehicle facing forward you still have a left hand and right hand. It's basic standardization, makes all parts warehouses simple to operate and maintain inventory, as well as making a logical thing for ordering the parts you need.

But remember we have to have directions on shampoo, and commercials telling us not to eat laundry soap...

It sounds like we're all saying the same thing, but bigruss has created the most convoluted way of getting there.

Left turn - left side....Right turn - right side.

Damn, didnt realize this question would spark debate.

Might want to tone it down with your controversial thread topics. ;missingteeth;

Reminds me of when my Aunt was visiting from England. I went over to Dad's place to pick her up, and went into the house. When we were ready, we went outside and she instinctively went to the left side of the car. I calmly asked her to go to the other side of the car, since I would be driving :)

At least you didn’t ask her to ride in “the boot.” :icon_rofl:
