go to a bone yard and get a ranger that has a 3.08 rear.
mind you its gunna be more of a slug off the line.
Are you sure you have 3.48 gears not 3.73 gears?
My F-100 has 3.42 with a AOD,at 60 Im running right at 1800 Rpm.Yep...I jacked the truk / turned the wheel / counted the driveshaft rotations around 3 & 1/2....looked on the tech chart....3.48
.Lowering the RPM doesnt always mean better, engine might do best at the higher RPM's. Brother in law has a 98 f150 AOD and at 1500 rpm is doing 55mph with the 4.6 engine and only gets 12mpg, and thats not pulling a trailer. As Ive read, your getting 20+ mpg now, Id keep her as she is.exactly.....you gotta watch the vacuum guage & keep the reading high/his gearing is bogging the engine down/I'd rather get 24 mpg with a 20% dropp in rpm if I can keep the vacuum reading high at the same time......for cruising across the U.S.
I think since DG's truck is built on a Ranger platform he'd be fine with 3.08 gears. After all, they DID come stock in Rangers. Besides, if he bolts the axle in and liked the old one better, he can chalk it up to the meds and switch it back.
I get about 15 mpg with the 357 if i stay out of it.
Going to 3.73 as soon as I can find a 9" center section with Trac loc I can rebuild.
Mpg and back tires will suffer greatly!
