Josh40601's Build Thread. (D-ranged)

Bull shit... I ran a bead across the top where the license plate was welded in... Warped it. the back side is all strands of beads about 4" long.

Started building the mounting points. Used the bracket off a factory bumper, and I used the DD as a mockup truck, since, well, it has plenty of scratches anyway.

As you can see, the bumper is warped all to hell, or should I say was. We cut the seams of the license plate area, and flattened the bumper back out. No pics of that yet. More to come this week.

I never use anything thinner than 1/4" for bumper and I have never had problem with warping. IMO if it warped that bad, then its not going to protect the body from a hard hit anyway.

I think most bumpers I've seen built have been 3/16's

That's what it is. 3/16" cold rolled, and it still warped. I didn't think it would either, but it sure as hell did.

My front bumper is 3/16" as well and it's been slammed into rocks and trees morn than I would like, and it only has a couple small dings. Once I do some bracing, I think it will be plenty strong

I'll post a pic of how it sits now tonight

Were ya burning it in pretty hot? I tend to use more heat than is needed and end up with a lot of squiggily projects.. :annoyed:

Apparently part of being a good welder is knowing how to prevent warping. I still haven't figured it out, I can warp 1/2".

It's all about knowing where to put the heat...

Yea I have the welder cranked up pretty high. I want to make sure I get that penetration. This bumper is actually going on a friend's truck. (blue Ranger in the background). It will be color matched and line-X on the top. The one for D is exactly the same, but I will be doing a couple of mods to the bumper to make it fit my needs.

Well, I pulled the other steering shaft off the 2001 frame. Doubt I will get anywhere yet as I still have a full weekend planned, but it's getting closer.

Well, D offered up its front axle to make room for the Ex's front axle.
