It’s out!

JMcFly’s XLT Simple Restoration and Mods

It’s back in!!

Got it back in before the rain came down. It’s a lot easier at home than the junkyard. I can’t seem to get the drums off. They spin so the brake pads aren’t stuck. I’m guessing the face is rusted to the axel face. I’ll have to spray and pray it with kroil.

Should have it all back together tomorrow morning since it’s raining the rest of the day. Then I’ll rebuild the rear brakes, change the diff oil, bleed the brakes, and hopefully be able to drive.

With the failure you had, way nicer to have it happen at home than out driving!

Glad you have it back together, the other way they stick on is rust on the alignment part of the end of the axle shaft, if there's rust there or paint holding rust together from the looks of it that would do it.

^ This.

I'd hit that edge with some sandpaper. Can use brake cleaner if you wanna just wipe all the paint off...

After you soak the hub around the center of the axle, hit it hard like the picture shows below in those areas. Hit it around the face of the drum. This will start rocking the drum on the axle and break it loose, without chipping or damaging the drum itself.

I’m going to hit it like it owes me money. If it doesn’t budge I’ll just cut it with an angle grinder and wedge it off since I have new drums.

Drum brakes are abolsute hull crap. I can’t get my first side back together. Hate them

I need like 6 hands to hold the auto adjuster cable and the guide and push the brake pad in. Like seriously. This is stupid

The cable keeps slipping under this bracket which won’t stay seated in its stupid hole

2 hours. Why do people say drums are easy. This is such garabge

I found another video that made more sense. In it they held the auto adjuster up and looped the spring onto it instead of how I was trying.

It’s all back together I think. But the skies have opened up.

Bit late, but I've always preferred pictures and text to video tutorials, and drum brakes are no exception. It's also easier with the axles out.

Yeah. Not taking axles out for brakes.

I got everything buttoned up and the brakes are still squishy. Need to bleed them more. I used my mitt vac but it wasn’t good enough I guess

It works!

If they are squishy, yes air. But if the pedal seems low, they need to be adjusted. To get it right, jack the wheel up and turn it by hand while turning the adjuster, till you can't turn the wheel, it locks up. Then turn the adjuster back till you can turn the wheel, but there is still some rubbing of the shoes. Then do the other side.

I may need to adjust them more then. I thought they were adjusted sufficiently.

I’ll adjust and bleed the rears again. Not sure if I should do the fronts.

Yeah. Not taking axles out for brakes.

Ordinarily, I feel you, but sometimes when it's the first time you've touched the brakes on that axle, the job is hard enough.

Plus, since you're doing the diff fluid anyway, it's barely any extra trouble.

I’m a little apprehensive of taking axles out after my diff explosion. But I got it all done so it’s good to go now.

You might also want to take a look at the windshield and where it is glued in.
