I have a 04 ranger with the 3.0. I was looking online and found the JET performance chip, it claims to give your ranger almost 100 more horsepower and all these other features, something like the bullydog system would do for a diesel truck. Has anyone tried the jet chip on their ranger? how did you like it?

haven't tired it, but i have never once heard of somebody liking it. ALL i have heard that tried it said it HURT performance.

my 5.4 in my 99 f150 has 1, but it came with it, if you already have an exhuast and intake you will probably notice a difference(since it takes advantage of that) if not you probably wont notice anything

Don't waste your time or $ with a chip. No gains and your mileage will most likely drop. If you believe in it, I have an electric turbo charger you can buy.

Though a tuner would be helpful if you had an auto. The shift points could be changed to better suit the 3L.

$ for $ the best mod is a gear change.

The jet chip/programmer have a VERY basic, "one-size-fits-all" tune. It may help a little, but there are far better options.
I'd suggest an sct x-cal3 or livewire. Either one will hold 3 custom tunes, as well as a stock tune. The tunes are custom written for your truck, and can account for any mods you may have so that you get the best out of your tuner.

One thing for sure it won't get you 100 hp, maybe 5 - 10 tops if you have above said mods... Save your money and get the Xcal3

X2, check around, you will do much better with an X-cal tune written for your truck, and you will most likely find that its not a heck of alot more expensive than the Jet Module. Look into the Boss 3.0 tunes from Rogue, there seem to be many good reviews about them.

thanks for the help

well thanks for all the info, ill stay away from the jet chip. Im just looking for a little more out of my ranger so i have an exhaust and now just thinking of custom making my own cold air intake, the K&N intake is way to expensive for a tube and a filter! I noticed Ranger 44 said something about gears in the diff would make alot of difference...what would you recomend for the differential, what size gearing? i dont have the stock tires on the ranger either so the gears would also compensate for the taller tires.

A cold air intake won't really help you out. If you keep the stock air box and add a K&N drop in filter and then do a maf mod you would see better results.

As for gearing... what size tires do you have on the truck right now? You will probably want something like 3.73's or 4.10's. And as your truck is only 2wd you will only need to get gearing for the rear.

As far as gears go, it depends what you have now. For most 2wd rangers, 3.73's are plenty of gear( many came stock with this ratio). If you have tires that are a good bit larger than stock, 4.10's may be better. Check the tag on your dif, or door jamb, and see what you currently have first.

Underdrive pulley's are the best bang for your buck mod for the 3.0 imo. Dyno tested to get you 8hp and 11 lb/ft. Pair them with an e-fan, and your engine will rev much more freely, your truck will be quieter, and you will notice a difference in power. MPG's will probably get better too, which is always a good thing!

yeah take it from someone who got suckered into buying one, DON'T!!!!! no HP gains terrible Gas Mileage and it feels like it dogs the heck out of the enigne. I am still punching myself repeatedly for buying this
