Is this normal?

you can use grease instead or bread. but grease flows easier and sneaks out thru the openings and doesn't work as good as bread.
the best part of using bread is that when you need an extra hand to hold all the tools you can in good conscience hold the bread with your teeth.
as usual,,, don't swallow :icon_rofl:

That is normal stuff there.

What really matters are the actual surfaces that do the work.

BTW... that pilot bearing looks pretty dry...
BTW.....should I be greasing anything before re-installation?

That's not rust, that's a little surface oxidation. Come to NH and I'll show you some rust if you want to be horrified. I would clean the input splines on the transmission with a wire brush and apply a TINY amount of light grease when it goes back together.
Should I be greasing anything else?

I've done the bread trick a few times but your local auto parts store should have a pilot bearing puller for rent.

A note on that HF slide hammer. The thread size is weird, it only works with that set of pullers and vise Versa. I didn’t find any other slide hammer or pullers that matched that size.

So if you buy that, and want a new type of puller later, you will also need a new slide hammer.

Wow. Ty so much!!

Maybe a little on the very end of the input shaft where the bearing rides. If the shaft is rusty just polish it with some steel wool.

Ty. I guess that must be what the dab of grease they sent is for huh.

Ok guys. Tomorrow I remove the old and install the new. Any last minute advice. Something I need to know. All is helpful as this is a first for me. I removed the transmission with no jack and will be replacing it that way too. Flood my thread with advice. Teach me oh great ones!!! Lol

conveniently the 2wd trans is only like 70 pounds, but getting it back in is harder than getting it out...

Hopefully the kit you got has the clutch alignment tool, if not it will save some cussing! Put a ratchet strap over the top of the frame rails and hook it on the bottoms at about the midpoint of the trans, this will let you hold it up and support the weight when you are lining it up. You will have to turn the trans some to get the splines lined up to the clutch plate, and it'll want to stop going in about 1/2" or so from being against the engine, gently walking it in with the outer two bellhousing bolts usually works, but don't force it!

I cut the heads off 2 long bolts and put them in the block to guide the tranny home.
make sure they are long enough to remove when the tranny is in.

have a floor jack?
on mine I removed the cup and bolted on a piece of 2 x 6 wood. then added 2 shelf supports facing up to cradle the tranny and keep it relatively upright.
