So I changed my oil today and noticed I was 1/2 quart low. Is my truck burning oil or should i not worry about it?

Do you see blue smoke out the exhaust? Do you see fresh leaks where you park?

When was the last time you topped it off / changed it? I mean, if it was 6mo ago and you lost a 1/2 quart, I wouldn't worry about that.

Will

no blue smoke, and the oil change before this one was about 3 1/2 to 4 months ago. no leaks either and the engine is dry as a bone on the outside.

RUN ER TILL SHE PUKES! just check on the oil cap/coolent ocasionally to make sure your heads not cracked, if it looks like a chocolate milkshake, then your screwed

More importantly, how many miles has it been since you changed the oil? Unless it was only a few hundred miles, I wouldn't worry about it.

your gonne be fine. just to be sure, ya did a filter right?

i bet it just didnt have to correct amount in it before.

yeah did a filter. the old oil looked used of course but not milky so no cracked head, and the last oil change was around 3600 miles ago

i wouldn't loose a second of sleep over it, unless you see blue smoke...

Only 1/2 a quart low in 3600 miles?

I used to have a car that would lose 4 quarts in 360 miles. That was a problem since it was a 4 qt engine.

shit i have to check my gas every time i stop to fill the oil, but my 2.9 has god knows how many miles on it, misfires and runs rich as hell. no worries tho, i've got a 302 waiting to swap in as soon as i get back from this damn deployment

Just keep an eye on it. It should be fine. You should check all fluids and tires at least once a week. Take care of your ride, Bro!!!!

Many moons ago a friend of mine bought a ford van with a 302 in it- it used quite a bit of oil right out of the box. Ford told him if it used a quart every 800 miles or more it was normal...

I had a 91 Mazda (jap engine) that used a quart every 2500 miles, I was doing 3000 mile changes. I switched to synthetic, same brand, same weight, and it went 6500 before needing a quart. I went to 8000 mile changes because the oil was still clean looking until then. That really doesn't make sense why it did that but it did. 1/2 quart in 3600 is fine. If it gets dirty really quickly it could be a sign of blowby/ring wear. Still not a big deal. Pour oil in it and ride.
