Is this bad?

Nothing is wrong. Almost every engine burns a little bit of oil.

^That.

I think you are totally fine. In fact, half quart is pretty good.

Personally, I lose a little under one quart per oil change and I have 156k on mine.

thanks guys! and i always check the condition of the oil and all fluids at least once a week. except lately my dipstick has been reading that the oil level is waayyyy above the full line.

Probably that extra 1/2 quart you just put in.

Probable sitting on a decline when checking.

Most likely it is fine, just keep an eye on it as long as you don't have blue smoke or milky oil from a cracked head.

my 4.0L weeps a lil from the front main seal, but it is not enough to register on the dipstick during 4000mile oil changes. motor has 230K miles on it and i never need to add any.

no this happened before the oil change, and now after it reads perfect. what i don't get is why it was reading so high before the oil change even though it was a 1/2 quart low

My 148k 4.0 loses maybe 1/8th of a quart of Max Life Full Syn every 3000+ miles, the Bronco 2 lost 2 quarts a week, and the Ranger lost a quart in 3000. Like everyone said, no milk, no smoke, no problems.

It was probably oil hang in the oil filter. That, or you were parked on an incline. Don't lose sleep over it, if its in the marks, its good.

Heck, my 96' 2.3L loses 8oz of oil every 5k miles. Not bad for an engine with 137k miles.
