Is there a way to find out how many liters the truck has?

the Windstar ( it has the dumbest EGR setup in the world)

While I usually agree with most things you have to say... I can't agree with this statement.

My wife old Nissan Altima had the worst EGR system... They used the VVT to hang the exhaust valve open longer on deceleration. (Great idea on paper, not so good on the engine.). When the cat falls apart every 70k miles or so (another piss poor design) it pulls pieces into the engine and takes out the cylinder walls in a matter of minutes.

The 2.8's aren't bad engines, I turbocharged a completely stock 2.8 (except for the TRW aluminum timing gear) with a 4 speed, never had any problems running up to 7 psi of boost on it. The first couple of years of the 2.9 were real head crackers. The 3.8 in my sisters 2003 Mustang just went over the 200,000 mile mark with no problems, my dads F150 with the 4.2 is close to the 375,000 mile mark with no problems. You just have to take good care of them.
