Is ordering important in putting back pushrods

I saw on youtube people always putting pushrods into a cardboard box they made holes in to remember their order to put back. Does that really make a difference if all the pushrods are not misshaped?

You can cause damage to your rocker arms and lifters since the wear patterns will be different on both those items. I don't think it will be armageddon if you forgot where they were, I have never seen a catastrophic failure caused by this, but if you're doing a full rebuild you might as well do it right.

:attention_whore: Negative rep for multiple threads on the same topic, your questions don't get answered any faster and your just annoying the people answering them. :attention_whore:

It is probably not a big deal but I always put the pushrods back in the same place on my race car. I feel that once the pushrods are worn in to the mating surface you have more uniform contact. If you change the location it has to wear in again to the mating surface. This results in inceased wear and less stability in the valve lash gap. It does not take much effort to keep them in the same location so why increase the potential for a problem by just putting them in randomly?

It is important. The ends of those rods are wear surfaces, and wear surfaces become a matched set quickly. Since you pulled your engine apart to do lifters I don't think it will leave you sit if you don't get them in the right spots, but it is an important thing to do.

Since push rods are fairly cheap, and a wearable item, if your budget allows it might not be a bad idea to just replace them.

If you didn't keep them in order you will need to replace the engine..............

Kidding :)

As others said it is a good idea to put lifters, pushrods and rockers back in their original positions, and pushrods top/bottom orientation, but if you can't you can't, not a big deal, and if the ends all look good you will be fine.
Next time you will know to keep them in order.

Immerse new(or old) hydraulic lifters in a tray of oil overnite or for an hour or two before installing, so they are not dry when starting, or disable spark and crank engine over a few times, which you should do anyway, to get oil pumped up to the top of the engine before starting.

I would imagine that the most noticeable thing will be a bit of noise initially until they wear together...sort of like a newly wed couple but less sex...
