Every Thursday night, a local resturant does a cruise night. I went down tonight and ran into a guy who had a nicely modded '97 2.3 5-speed XLT.

He seemed like a nice guy, but was full of BS in some respects.

1. He claimed that his truck has done 227 mph (with a turbo'd 2.3, but I didn't see no stinkin' turbo!) on the Mass Pike. Is it possible for ANY Ranger (without a JATO rocket or jet turbine and with a stock body) to do 200+ mph on a highway under its own power and not disintergrate?

2. He also claims that you could squeeze a 7.3 Powerstroke in the engine bay of a Ranger without major surgery. Again, I call BS, but I know enough to know I don't know somethings about Rangers. That's why I come here!

So, should I raise the :bsflag: on this guy or does he have some valid claims?

Yeah, it's BS. The Ranger doesn't have enough downforce to go that fast, it would be grossly unstable. Maybe he meant 227 km/h? It's within the realm of possibility.

I'm nearly certain a 7.3L psd will not fit in a Ranger without major modification, maybe he was thinking of Cummins' 3.9L 4bt engine?

A Ranger would probably fall apart at that speed. And my dad has a 7.3 Powerstroke in his truck, and that thing looks like it would take up the entire engine bay in my truck.

Well there is a member on here that has a highly modded 6.0L ford diesel in his ranger drag truck....enough time and money, anythings IS possible i guess...

Any mass produced vehicle would start to lose control at 180mph.

He clearly said 227 MILES PER HOUR and 7.3 PowerStroke!

Frankly, unless it was a tube frame chassis, a stock Ranger frame might self-destruct at around 150 MPH.

its always amusing when people who know absolutely nothing about cars try to make up lies about thier vehicles because they think i know nothing also...

get a big crowd gathered around him and call the BS flag and watch him sweat

My 1985 mustang gt would do 160 mph flat out thats floored in 5th with a hill to help.

And it wasnt terribly stable at that speed I only did that twice. It loved 130 mph it hugged the road nicely at that speed. and thats plenty fast.

a 2.3 turbo. 227mph? I dont see it. I see a truck flipping over for lack of down force on the front. 227 KPH maybe. that coverts to 141 mile. thats in the realm of doable and believable. I still wouldnt want to be in a light truck doing 141 without some front and rear wings =>

He's full of BS. If memory serves, a couple years ago a modified body Tacoma set a land speed record for the small truck class and it was only in the 160mph-180mph range.

Back when I used to lurk the Tacoma boards all the guys who drag raced them called it the "brick wall" effect. Once a pickup truck gets around 90mph or so it's as aerodynamic as a brick wall and it just doesn't want to accelerate well, regardless of how much power you add.

:buttkick::bsflag:

Having driven on the mass pike several times?

Leaving the claims of extreme speed aside---

You'd be a dumbarse to even attempt it....to many grannies and gramps in the hammer lane. Not to mention several hilly sections where the trucks? Well....you'd soon be either run over--or into one....

I'd go as far to ask if this guy is trying to...shall we say....

Compensate for something??

even at 100 mph a ranger will feel unstable.

its just pure BS

I guess the 7.3 question depends on what you consider "Major Surgery".

I heard of a guy doing it with what basically amounted to a 6" body lift and the total removal of all the splash guards and inner fenders from the engine bay. Note, I only HEARD of this, I have NOT seen the truck for myself, so I don't know if that story is true. I however would consider a 6" body lift to be rather akin to Terra Reid's boob job. Major surgery majorly botched.
