Is it possible to swap in a tach gauge cluster?

Was looking into adding a tach to my 4.0/auto and wondered if it was possible to swap in a gauge cluster with the tach on it. Would perhaps the odometer be a problem? Or computer hook up?

Shouldn't be a problem, tach wire should be in place on the back of the instrument cluster.

You can swap odometer over

1998 to about 2004 should be plug and play

I think 2005 got the full electronic instruments

So, even if I don't have a tach in stock configuration, I should still have a harness plug for it behind my dash? I've a 99 btw.. do I need to take a cluster from another 4.0?

Tach signal comes from the computer in 1995 and up Rangers so instrument cluster from a 4cyl Ranger will work fine in a V6 ranger, 1994 and earlier would have a switch or jumper on the back of the tach for number of cylinders

Yes, the tach wire will be there, even in non-tach vehicles

Good read here on cluster swaps: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42909

...1994 and earlier would have a switch or jumper on the back of the tach for number of cylinders...

Not sure what year this change was made but it was much earlier than '94. I am thinking 1989? I put a cluster from a 94 4.0 Ranger into my 93 2.3 Ranger. It was plug-and-play.

This swap ended up being as easy as stated except calibrating the speedometer. I didn't do well with the AA method and the transplant speedometer was broken.. but other than that, all dummy lights work and gauges are good to go.

Hi All,

Luckily, I was able to find an instrument cluster from a Ford Explorer the only problem is the instrument cluster in my 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 2.5 L RWD does NOT have Vehicle Theft Indicator/Sensor. However, the one that I found from the local yard has a vehicle theft indicator.

To summarize my new cluster has all gauges as the old one with two additions, one is the Tach Cluster and the other is Theft Indicator.

I am wondering if I could make this swap? My reason for swap is to have an RPM gauge in my Ranger.

Could you please comment if this swap is possible?

Thank you for your time.

I got a 99 ranger auto with 4.0 and today when I left work it started whining it’s been slipping between 2-3 and 3-4 for a while now and changed the fluid when it started that and all been good for past few
Months and then I got to leave this morning and I’m losing reverse and got a really loud whine too it and I was going to try and change the fluid again and maybe change the valve body gasket but don’t want to waste money if it ain’t going to work and just save up to get a rebuild kit. If anyone knows what it might be would love to hear from you. I’m thinking maybe the front pump or torque converter but hoping it’s just the valve body but doubt I could ever get that lucky lol
