is it illegal?

Here in Maryland it is, unless its tagged as historic but it has to be 20 years old to become historic!

around here any(and I mean any) modification to the exhaust system can get you a ticket, if the officer wants to push it. I don't have any problems(my wife works across the lobby from the PD and I know most of them), but I don't flaunt it either, The main thing without a muffler. would be the noise. IMO.
One way you could find out is to call your local PD and ask.......

in maine...no matter what year it has to havea a muffler...and any thing made with a cat has to have a cat

It's only illegal if a cop gives you shit for it or it wont pass emissions/inspection.
Around here nobody cares, I don't know why you would though, it sounds like ass.

Even if it is legal it is obnoxious and gives a black eye to 4x4's everywhere.

Just install an exhaust cut-out valve. With the flip of a switch you can be back on your stock muffler for cruising past the cop cars.

Federal emissions makes it illegal to remove the muffler. Anywhere you can be cited. Here in FL you get caught, you have 7 days to have it fixed and inspected by LEO. Then you take the signed citation in and you get off with a $7.50 cost.

What'ya trying to do? Keep pushing it and you get laws like in Denver, that on a motorcycle you have to have the OEM muffer or else, no aftermarket stuff. Only OEM.

Uhhh....right....

Here in NY, even with our mostly draconian laws, I ran a straight pipe for years and passed emissions and all, No tickets due to noise or anything.

i have just a straight pipe on my 89...as soon as i get a new trans i plan on getting a flowmaster, i have come to hate haveing my exaust like this, its too loud on the highway and it is a possible ticket if a get a cop that wants to push the issue

I'm in cali....probably don't have to say it, but the ticket for anything to do with exhaust is "modified exhaust" pretty vauge so they can write us up for whatever they please.

Nothin like that here in Hillbilly Heaven(Montana) (I have the right to call it hillbilly heaven since I am a born and raised montanan and LOVE my state)

It all depends on the state and what emmisions they have. I lived in Virginia and all that was required by law was a Converter. I ran my Turbocoupe with a single cat and then a y-pipe and duals all the way to the back bumper. Sounded great.

depends, my 4.9l f 150 sounded great with no muffler, just the cat, the exhaust rotted away at the cat, never had it replaced, sounded great, most people thought I had an 8 cyl and duals under it, then when I told them they laughed at me.
