Ok, this is fawking weird!! :icon_confused:

Seems I can't get to Google, but CAN get to Yahoo...
Then it switched opposite, Google came in, but couldn't get Yahoo anymore. Now I can't get either one. I couldn't get to Cardomain earlier too, then I could for awhile, now I can't again (it seems more sites I cannot get to than can).

everything's perfect on TRS right now, although earlier when I first tried I couldn't get on here either.

Its always the same error whenever I get it "Cannot find server" (and it pops up right away instead of trying for several seconds like it usually does)

Normally I'd blame my computer, except the same thing happens on all three different computers in the house here.

How can so many sites not work (or be intermittent) at different times??? (just tried Wikipedia again, now it works, but didn't 3 minutes ago)

I've had this occur in the past too, although not NEAR as widespread as right now (usually if I hammered on the Refresh button a whole bunch of times, I could get it to finally load up, but doesn't seem to help anymore, just works when it wants to)

Anyone know WTF? :dunno::dunno:

Sounds like an internet related problem to me. Try restarting your modem and router.

Been working just fine at my end. I agree that it's probably an internet issue in your area.

Yeah, already tried all the modem & router rebooting crap. I went to use my dialup to see if it happened on that too, and since I hadn't used the dumb thing in probably over a year, the numbers apparently changed and I couldn't use that either :icon_twisted:

For whatever reason, now the problem seems to have cleared itself (again). :icon_confused:

I sortof figured it might be something in my area, I can't seem to isolate it to my comp or the router (I'm guessing it would have to be something with the ISP).

Can anyone say what can cause some sites to work, while others don't? (and totally at random like that)?

there is no way for sites to be intermittent on all 3 machines unless there is a issue in the router/modem, or ISP's end, it does it here from time to time

I had some of the same problems. I have a linksys router and that was the problem. I dont know if you have linksys but I had to call them and try to sort things out which took forever.

Statically assign them on one machine to something like the verizon globals...
4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.4 <any of those 4

Yeah if your ISP is in and out, it'll give you that message, and some sites will come in and others wont, but its just luck of the draw depending on if you have access at that moment in time. Happens to us occasionally f'ing Comcast:temper:

The only thing that would let you to some sites.. and not others would be DNS... unless some how... some weird routing table issue occurs. Doubt thats the trouble though.

Some ISP's will passively proxy traffic, such as torrents... but other then that, I place my money on DNS if its happening to all machines.

I think my router is an "Airlink", I'd have to double-check though (definitely not Linksys). I doubt that's it though, it seems more on the ISP end like you're saying (next time it happens, I may try plugging the closest machine directly into the cable modem (bypassing the router) and see what happens). (all 3 boxes are wired by ethernet BTW)

I did wonder about the DNS thing, although I don't know enough about it to know how everything dealing with that works.

I'll probably just end up having to call up my ISP and ask WTF though, as this has been happening on & off for over a couple weeks now.

What exactly are 'globals'? (I'll probably need a sortof 'dumbed-down' explanation on it) Would those be the servers that I guess resolve the URLs to server IP addresses?

Shawn first reset the modem, wait for it to synch, then restart the router, then go to Start, Run, Then type CMD, when the command promp comes up type "ipconfig/release" it will then do a few things when its done type "ipconfig/renew" close out of that window and you should be good to go.

Do NOT reset your Modem!!!

Some Cable users can do it as their only authentication to the isp is their MAC address on the modem.

DSL users have VPI/VCI settings that they could loose by resetting, if using PPPoE or PPPoA could wipe authentication info on the modem...

Some modems if you reset, you might be required to bring back to isp to have them console in and fix.

Sorry, but that is very bad advice. You could power cycle, which is unplugging both devices, and powering up modem, then router, but that's for intermittent connections to re-force sync, pass new ips, etc.

Yup, they are the servers you use to resolve URLs with.. Exactly.

Verizons global servers (4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4) are 4 Big/Main DNS servers, that are available on the net for anyone to use. They are super reliable, and work well for tests like this.

Buddy, its fine to reset, power cycle, anything you want on cable modems, this is my profession. I work in cable. I work for Insight Communications and my brother works for Comcast. This knowledge is just not pulled out of my ass.
