I know that the older 2.9's had some problems with the heads I think, but I have it understood that in 1989 the heads were changed and improved. I could get this truck for $500. The only problem is the color. It is the red interior, but I could deal with it.

SO do you think it is a good deal, and if you know is it hard to change the interior to another color?

Thanks in advance...

The 2.9L heads were improved in the redesign but the cracking issue was not completely resolved. My 1990 Ranger with a 2.9L has 360,000 kms (223,000 miles) on it and it has the original heads and the engine runs great. If the truck you are thinking about getting is in good condition and runs great, go for it.:icon_thumby:

The "improved" heads still cracked. For 500 bux I would go for it. Take care of the motor use good fluids, flush the cooling system every year, and treat her nice and the 2.9 could last you. My buddies 87 BII has 375,000 miles on the original motor and heads.

interior change is easy if you go darker, or the original color is faded.

get an upholstery cleaner set up, preferably steam, and really clean it. take out the seats, get some spray upholstery dye and re color everything you want the new color. Some of the dyes are actually paint and will re-do the plastic trim too. I believe "duplicolor " has spray cans for about $7 each, and it will take about 4. fabric paint/dye can usually be had at chain auto parts stores or automotive paint suppliers except in Kalifirnia.

500 for a running truck, Kewl. check the coolant bottle for that nice clear green fluid with no brown streaks in the bottle. check the oil dipsticks for clean fluids too. be suspicious of new engine oil, and fresh tranny fluids.

good luck

My 89 has the original heads, and they are the old style. I think the tech section says the new style was phased in around 89 and you could end up with either style.

They have not had any problems although mildly overheated due to a bad auto trans, so I guess I lucked out.:icon_thumby:

For 500 bucks it worth it. I'd buy it if I were you.
