inline 6's

i still say old chevy or ford I6 from the 30's or 40's. wont be 4x4 but it'll haul

I thought the modulars were awesome when they first came out. I still think they're a very solid engine, and have seen quite a few with 250k and run like they're new. But they have suffered their share of issues. Shooting spark plugs, cracked exhaust manifolds (ever notice how all the high mileage 5.4 F-150's all have the same exhaust leak?) exploding intake manifolds (4.6L cars), and terrible valve seals (92-94 crown vic's) are some of the things that come to my head. And $60-$80 per coil times 8 cylinders is a bit rediculous when 2 coil packs at $40 a piece works just as well. And what's with having to remove the fuel rail to get the spark plugs out? That's retarded. And having to tear the front end off an otherwise perfect shape motor to replace the timing chain tensioners that ford decided to make out of plastic? That's also retarded. From a "having to work on it" standpoint, I'll take a 300 anyday.

Normally in a truck they just break the exhaust studs, the cast iron manifold doesn't expand the same as the aluminum cylinder head and after they get some rust on the studs they pop. They have improved studs out, my brother has replaced them on his '97 F-150 with a 4.6.

The 97 and I think 98 trucks only have two coilpacks. I know my brother's '97 has two, I think COP is a pretty recent development, like in the last 10 years or so.

The tensioners last plenty long as long as you keep oil in the engine, rarely do they have problems unless you run them dry (plastic vs steel) Few parts in a engine like being ran without oil anyway.

I would take the 300 6 very durable. U want to turbo the I6?? Check out this info...

TC DOHC I6
415.54959785629995 hp at 5500 rpm
416.67 tq across the range from 1950-5200 rpm
VS.
5.4 dohc boss v8
422 hp at 6500 rpm
406 tq at4750 rpm

The I6 has the v8 beat in the tq curve. The I6 is a flat tq curve i mean 416.67 foot pounds at almost 2000 rpm that is some serious power! The v8 beats it by only 6.46 hp and u have to go 1000 more rpm to reach it...... The I6 makes its tq all the way to 5200 rpm.

Here are the links to fpv Australia. The F6 UTE first then Super Pursuit.

What engine is that I6?

If it is a 300 it isn't a very fair comparison, with a DOHC head (which is far from stock) and blower compared to a 330 (5.4) NA V-8.

My stock 2v SOHC is rated at 350 lb-ft at 2500 rpm and is not afraid to rev if you ask it.

slap a aftermarket head a good intake and exhaust and a 4bl carb and you have a really stout engine that would suprise alot of people

doesn't the SC 5.4L in the 2009 Saleen make like 650HP and an ungodly amount of torque?

how does that compare to the above mentioned 300 I6 turbo?

The same goes for about any other engine as well...

My personal opinion is that the 300 is a pile of shit and I could care less if I ever saw one again unless it was free or very close to it. I have owned three and all three are down for the count. One threw a rod at 120k, the second lost oil pressure and died, and the third ran but had a really bad knock when I sold it.

I don't know why you guys have a problem with gas mileage in 300s and 302s. 300's were advertised at 21/27 and my 300's would do 20/22. I have never calculated what I am getting in the F150 but it doesn't seem too bad..

I need two heads for my engine! But ya, its all the same. Besides, you can dump all your cash into a 300 and I'll spend a quarter of that on my 302 and still come out with more horsepower, torque, and FUN.

My dad had the 300 in his '88 F-150 4x4. Truck worked great for plowing, towing snowmobile trailers, occasion off-roading (mostly mud and mild skidder trails) and as a daily driver. The truck served us well for many years and sold within a couple days of putting it out on the lawn. My dad was told to get the sixer over the eight as it was just as torquey and offered better mpg for commuting. I think they are fine, would I put one in my Ranger over the 4.0? Probably not since I am 2wd and someday I will be going the 5.0 or 4.6 route for a bada$$ street truck, but if the OP wants to use one for an off-road rig I see no problem with it and the strait six should make for a good dependable rig. As for the 6.0 Chevy, I could care less if I ever used on of those again. I drive one occasionally for work (Coca-Cola) hauling refrigerators and the occasional emergency load of soda (two pallets stacked about 5-6 feet high with soda) and I can say the 6.0 is a dog. You can watch the gas gauge fall and the only thing good about the truck is the noise it makes when you step on the skinny peddle :icon_thumby:. Not sure why they ever got the 6.0 instead of the Dmax, but I am sure it was due to cost of the truck fuel is cheap when you have such a large fleet of trucks so the up front cost of the Dmax was probably too much for management to justify. Just my two cents.

Why no coke can icon/smilie? :icon_pepsi:= :icon_confused:

If u clicked the links that i posted u would have been able to read about them. The doc tc 24v I6 and the 5.4 come from the factory... Granted its a 4.0 I6 by the way. U could pick up that f6 ute fully loaded for $51,83.65.

I say if u are going to do it use the 4.9....

Really? Thats hard to believe. The 300 is ussually expected to last atleast 300K.

Some 300s do good on gas, others suck it like theres no tomorrow. Really doesnt seem to be a pattern in it either. My uncle had a 92 2wd that would get 21, my buddies 94 2wd got 13. My 96 4x4 auto with 3.55s manages 13-15MPG.

later,
Dustin

I have only seen one fail early and that was my cousin's and he beat the dog snot out of it......... continually....... funny thing when it died though ............ everybody blamed it on being a Ford (big chevy family that one is).... not on the way Monte drove it.

So I have always heard...I guess everyone's experience is different. I don't have very good luck with anything.

Regarding the gas mileage thing, I had an '80 F100 and an '84 F150, both 4 speeds. The '80 was a little better sinced it was the overdrive 4 speed, but it was also the one that threw a rod at 120k, had the motor replaced, and then started knocking at 210k.
