inline 6's

Will, the 300 was offered right up untill 96, in the F250/350. It was cut after 96 because most 300's were sold in F150's and they couldnt seen keeping it around for jus the 3 or 4 3/4 and 1 tons it was put in.

The 300 musta been a good engine, it was offered in 1tons and larger, something the 302 cant claim.

Yes they were geared, but the 300 could still handle the stress, a 302 couldnt.

My dad pulled a 4horse all steel gooseneck horse trailer, with 4 horses, with the air on , in O/D at 70MPH with a 300 6 with 3.55 gears in a 94 3/4ton. Lets see a 4.0 or a 302 do that.

My grandpa had a '92 F-150 with the 300 in it, and he pulled a cattle trailer with 5-7 cows every month to market, and it pulled just fine, going down the highway at 55, you could barely tell it was back there... I'm just saying for a RBV a 4.0 will do all you ever need, and fits way easier...

has anyone tried this

I wonder has anyone tried a SHO tarus engine. A friend of mine had one of those, that thing ran like a scared rabbit. The cool thing about those engines is that the intake is symetrical & can be put on either way. they make good power. From what I understand they bolt up to almost any trans also. Maybe a SHO & a T-5 would be a good combo. What does anyone else think.

It's been looked at before, the problem was bolting it up to a transmission... They don't bolt up to any transmission, I believe they only bolt up to FWD 3.0 Vulcan pattern... They aren't that good of a truck engine though, yes they make good power, but they don't make it until way into the powerband... It would be a cool street racer set-up...

In a 4wd being used as a truck a 300 would kill it.

As far as I know, the SHO V6's bolt right up to the RWD Vulcan pattern.

again with the 300. how come nobody ever considers a 2F or a 3Fe or a Toyota 4.5L?

Oh, I thought I remember a thread talking about this and the only manual RWD transmission that would bolt up was some Aerostar transmission because the SHO had the FWD bell pattern... I don't know though... If it is RWD pattern that makes it alot easier...

That would be neat, but, then wouldn't you have to use the tranny H55 or whatever goes behind them, and the Toy t-case and the weird offset axles... I was thinking about doing 80 series SAS, then thought for a t-case I'd have to use the Toyota one, then decided I'd have to do an entire driveline swap and it just became kinda messy after that...

Why would you want something like that when a 300 is just as much work and better?

I thought about using the Toy powerplant because I could get 2 stout solid axles with E-lockers and the case was full-time 4x4 with CDL... But, it would be too much trouble, plus parts would be harder to find...

Hmm... Ranger 4.0l-400ish lbs... 300 I6-500ish lbs... Cummins 6BT-1000ish lbs... Not really a good fit, lol... It would be nice though...

the Toyota 4.5L rev at a much more usable RPM for hwy cruising considering they came stock with 4.10. the don't fall flat on their face at 3500 like the ford inlines. virtually indestructible and run forever. you would have to use a h55 or the landCruiser automatic but you can buy an adapter to adapt the h55 to an NP205 and the 80 series Land Cruiser had a rated towing cap of like 7000 pounds in an SUV that was already as heavy as a Suburban.

you could also use an early F model bell housing and hook to almost any transmission you wanted. I would run an NV4500/NP205 behind it.

and they weigh about the same as a 4.0L maybe less.
they are DOHC
212 HP @ 4600 RPM
275ft/lbs @ 3000 RPM

I believe that is more stout than a 302 and chasing a 351.

Thats about right inline with a 302.

Peak torque at 3000RPM? Thats getting up there awful high. A 300 is peaking between 1400 (Early Carbed versions) and 2000 (EFI Versions) and it pulls hard till 3500or so. EFI ones even do alright up till about 43 or 4400.

How much torque do they make below 2000RPM? where you mostly at starting off with a trailer or crawling a trail? My guess no where near where what the 300 has.

The only thing i can see the 4.5L having over the 300 is HP, and HP doesnt mean much.

Dustin
