I'm sure I got a short.

Feeds & speeds. Drilling steel, the bit speed is SLOW, and you will be pushing very hard. Don't overspeed the bit, as it will dull quickly. Stay with it slow, pushing hard, getting coils of metal, not chips- if possible. When you get metal dust, something is wrong. With aluminum, copper, brass the bit speed is FAST and you push lightly.

Cobalt is the name of the manufacturer, not the drill bit material. Typically "high speed steel" is what all decent bits are made with. I like the short ones. Mixing acetone with oil works to get into the smallest areas. The best penetrating product I've ever used is a very light oil mixed with a solvent.

It's OK to drill at an angle during the pilot drilling process to center up the hole before you finish up straight & through.

Tap all the threaded holes before the final bolt install, then use a copper or nickel based anti seize compound, never the aluminum "glue". The heat & cooling process works. Back & forth walking the bolt out. Drilling out the bolt with the tap size drill, then re-taping the hole helps the old threads come out.

Doug, congrats on your new class. That is awesome man! Yes Ford seems to make things worse with their way of doing things, so I understand your frustration. I remember working on my 67 impala up in the Michigan UP outside in the winter, so I feel for ya! Saying that it builds character is not why we are doing this type of stuff~ Thanks for the words my friend, you're helping us to help you Sir! I'm sure the automotive engineers at Ford would be proud to see their efforts helping us "flat landers" fight with their designs. :)- MaicoDoug.

No. It's not. Cobalt is one of the materials in the steel alloy used to make the drill.

I'm in my class room now using the wi-fi.

Thanks for all the help everyone I will write more after class.

Class is from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m..

We was let out of class early today.

I did talk to the teacher/instructor and showed him 2 of my drill bits.

He confirmed I was using too high of a speed and that I should have been using a cutting fluid or at least something to keep the bit cool.

He told me that once we got to the section on sharpening our tools he would tell me how to sharpen my drill bits.
He also warned me that it's a 50/50 bet on how good the sharpening is and how well the bits keep the sharpness.
He said sharpening drill bits is a talent in itself and some people have it and some people don't.
And some people have just enough of it to get by.

I did not ask him when we would get to that part of the course because I didn't want to monopolize too much of his time, while there was other people there wanting to speak to him.

However from what he said in class it will be within the next three classes maybe four or five at the most when we get to the tool sharpening part of the course.

The whole course is only 16 classes. And we're already 2 classes into that 16 classes. So it won't be to long before we get to the tool sharpening part.

I believe that @MaicoDoug was under the understanding that Cobalt was a brand name because,
like me he mistook the brand name Kobalt for the metal Cobalt.

I made the same mistake when I first heard about the metal named Cobalt.

Arggg....."Cobalt" was used as some sort of name for the drill bit product that Doug posted, (I would hardly say that there was ever any "cobalt" in any consumer available cutting tools) "Kobalt" is a china junk name that the largest pusher of china junk uses, lowes.

What kills me is all the "Titanium" words employed when never any titanium is ever used except maybe sprayed as a paint on china junk. 6AL4V-Ti is fun stuff as is 304 SS. I'll take the stainless steel any day. It's half as hard. Autoclaved Carbon Graphite tubing cuts easy, but strips teeth right off a chrome moly hacksaw blade no matter how many teeth/inch you use. Cast iron you have to tell yourself is easy. It work hardens, but it's easy. It just don't weld worth a *rap.

FEEDS & SPEEDS

The only issue I ever have in sharpening drill bits are when they get over 1 inch. It's all in the wrist.

Good luck in your class Doug. No loose clothing. Hope they let you weld something, harden something, braze something, mill something, shear, bend & brake something too!

Thanks for the well wishes @MaicoDoug

I too hope to be able to do all of those things in the classes I'm going to be taking.

On Wednesday we did some layout on some flat steel ( I do believe it was steel. ) for some holes and cutting we will be doing next Wednesday and maybe the following Monday.
It was the first time I ever used any layout die.
I usually just use a permanent marker when I'm fabbing stuff for myself.

This coming Monday being a holiday we don't have no class because the school's closed.
I have some reading homework to do before our next class.

Right now I have a loaner book because I don't know if my grant covers me buying the book or not yet.
The loaner book I have is the second edition.
Everyone else in class has the third edition of the book.
I'm also the only one with a loaner book.

I got to read about 65 pages for my homework.
And with me having dyslexia I'm going to have to read it probably five or six times before I truly understand it.
And most likely by the time I get to class I won't remember half of it either.

I'm once again at my brother Andy's using his wi-fi.
I'm using it for 2 reasons.
My 1st reason is to get on here and read what everybody's wrote and update my posts.
The 2nd reason is to check my emails from the school to see if my guidance counselor or whatever she's called has replied to my last email to her asking about the Grant and paying for a book.

I would have already looked into this, if I would have known I needed a book. I was under the understanding I didn't need no materials except for a pen.

Once again sorry about the book everyone.

Dyslexia you say? All during my schooling I must of drove the teachers crazy. I would never believe anyone, teachers would tell me "just take my word". The way I learn is to figure out how it's not if that makes sense. Falsely proving everything. In metal shop at 6 weeks through a 12 week class, I was 100% finished & now helping others. Something about the shop classes that allowed me to cruze right through. I hope you have the same experience Doug! Everybody learns different, as long as they do learn.

Just don't put no bullets in the furnace. That's a Bill Cosby reference about when he was in metal shop. Haha.

I believe every bit of that @MaicoDoug .

I don't know for sure if I'm remembering right or not but one of Bill Cosby episode where the teacher draws some stuff on them chalkboard to explain dyslexia, I don't remember if it was to Bill Cosby or to the guy playing his son Theo, anyways in my experience that explanation of dyslexia was the best explanation of dyslexia I've ever seen.

I've seen all kinds of different ways trying to explain it by all kinds of different people but the way they explained it came through to me really well.

Happy memorial day everyone!

Drive carefully.
I hate to be that guy but drink responsibly and use designated drivers.

You take all the fun out of it.

actually, I’m at work until 12:30.

@Curious Hound
I went to work cleaning up some roofing tear off right after I wrote that this morning.
I'm now at my brother Andy's because he's having his cookout this afternoon instead of this evening.
Because his girl's got to work this evening.
I'm headed back to work on the roofing tear off pile, after the cookout.

So I know what it's like to have to work on holidays.
