OK here's the story. i was being forced to rebuild my 2.9 in a weekend. that's pulled out rebuilt and put back in. so i was moving and the motor lost compression and would not start. so i tore the motor out and broke it down and cleaned it up. i ended up not getting it back to gather in the weekend. so i towed it to my new house job. and i was in a hurry to get it back to gather before work. and i think i might have forgotten to put in the rear main..... maybe but not sure yet. my 1986 ford ranger super 2.9 4x4 a/c will drive around town and not leak much oil. but if i go above 45 it looks like some one is pouring oil out of a jug threw my bell housing. how hard is it to replace the rear main with the engine still in the truck?

Just pull the engine out again, mine as well double check everything else

yes i do still have the problem. ive been busy and have not got that one fixed. and did not want to post this one on the same one. not sure if that was right or what.

It sounds like you know what's wrong and how to fix it,
Good luck,

Richard

Naw your not stupid we think of it as being SPECIAL:-) Pulling the tranny might be easier either way it has to happen. I put a rear main in a dodge 360 not knowing the part store guy gave me a seal for a ford 360. I heard it spin on the initial startup and just poured out at an idle. Did you use oil on the crank surface when you installed the seal they burn up real fast without lube. If you forgot it it would just pour out at an idle also my guess is it got fried on the initial startup. Either that or you did not press it strait in and warped the seal or you put it in backwards you want the flat end of the seal facing toward the tranny.

That's alright, at least you didn't replace the oil pump and forget to reinstall the drive shaft for it.

:idiot:

ok i finally pulled the motor cuz i had a different problem and i did forget to put the rear main in. its in the truck now hope my leak goes away. lol

if this is a contest ....... bet I am more stupider.......

put gasoline into a diesel.....

I did it to a 78 diesel rabbit when I was 16....... it was going to cost more than the car was worth to fix so I scrapped it and bought a gas rabbit.
