Im in the hunt

For a 4bt! Any suggestions where to start looking?

I Don't but i was thinking of the same thing....Kabota tractors have them i know...maybe find one that was damaged other than the motor?

I have read and heard that a 7.3L will fit in a ranger...Bigger is better, right?

Kabota uses the cummins?I dint know that. As far as the 7.3 I've heard a lot of cutting is involved. So im trying to save as much of down time as I can. Plus I think the 4bt would fit the purpose of what I'm goin for a lot better. But more power to ya:icon_thumby:

kabota uses a kabota motor.

look into buying a used box van (ups/fedx/delivery) e-bay. if it doesn't come with the transmission you want. you can get adaptors or custom bell-housings.
look online for rebuilt engines... commercial equipment actions, gov surplus..

a smaller engine like the south american power stroke (4 cylinder diesel) from a land rover, south american ranger. (get tranny at the same time). recyclers in southern states can import the engines/transmissions..

if you want new, go for the cummins 4bt 3.9 L has tier 4 emissions.
lots of choices without putting in 3/4-1 ton 6 cylinder diesel engine into your rig..
(diesel engine weigh allot)..

It seems to me like the engine bay is smaller in the 93+ models anyway, so i probably wouldn't do the 7.3 i'm pretty sure it was done in a late "80s

plus, I've read that you can get over 800hp from a 4BT if you tripple turbo it:icon_rofl: far too many horses for me though.

Yeah no triple turbo for me. Maybe twin but that's a lot of power.

What does it come in?

Small stake body cab over trucks kinda like the small Isuzu flatbeds that tote around mowers and such. Construction industry uses them too. Always selling equipment and trucks when a job gets done might find one cheap.

It's a 4.5l Powerstroke. They come in the mid 2000s Ford LCF (Low Cab Forward). They are basically v6 versions of the 6.0l.

4BTs are getting harder to find now. (read that as more expensive when you do find one.) 80's step vans are the best place to find them. Old Frito-lay vans, fed-ex, etc had them.

Generally, if they are stick, they have a Ford small block bell housing adapter. If they are autos, its a Chevy trans. (Not always true, but 90% of the time.)

I could have sworn the badge said 4.6 but anywho yea that's the type of truck. I was close enough lol

:icon_confused:seems to me like the '04 Kubota uses the 3.9L Cummins 4BT...

Most Kabotas use Kabota engines so don't go grab an engine out of one thinking since it is out of a Kabota it has have a Cummins. CaseIH used the 5.9 a lot in their bigger tractors you might see if they used the four banger in the medium to small tractors.

I have been doing randam spot checks on tractordata and I don't see any other than various Kabota four and five cylinder diesels listed. :dntknw:

Realistically what can you get out of a 4bt without going too overboard?

look for a marine 4BT about 115 with the pump cranked is all for horse. You want more, you might as well plan on spending 5k. Ive been looking for step vans but no luck I've been looking for a 4bt for a couple months now with no luck, everyone wants a ton of cash for em. I'm now thinking about a 5.9 since you can get them just as cheap as a 4bt.

I've heard about using a marine motor but I've also heard to look out because some use reverse rotation? Also will the 5.9 fit? I haven't had any luck so far but I ain't givin up cuz I want me a diesel ranger!lol and I figured about 3500 for a performance upgrade so I guess I'll have to keep Savin for a bit longer.
