Im in the hunt

That depends on what your plans are.

What do you want to do with it?
Do you plan to tow with it? If so, how heavy is the load?
Are you running an overdrive trans? If so, what trans?
Is it your DD? Is it a fuel mileage build? Is it going to be off-road only/mostly?
Do you run highways all the time or not very often?
How much power to you want the motor to make?
(go into detail, dont just answer the questions.)

These engines really like to be between 1700-1900 for the best economy. If you're running the highway a lot, plan for that RPM range at your normal cruising speed and base your tire/gearing off that. Above 2000 rpm the mileage really starts to drop off quickly, the motor itself can handle it all day long.

I do drive the truck everyday so yeah it'll be my dd
As far as towing a small trailer,14ft alum. Fishing boat, or a trailer to haul a car. So torque is a big reason why I want to put the diesel in
Trans wise I haven't decided yet but prolly an od Trans.
Fuel I want decent but not to where I have no power.
I want to be around 350hp.
I drive highways most of the time but again I drive back roads a lot too.
I will wheel it but not too much considering I'll be driving it daily.

I found a 80's dodge with the 5.9 for 1000. Thinking about getting it.any thing I should be looking for?

A motor with 2 less cylinders.

Might take a little (or a lot of) work to get that 5.9 crammed in there, but it would be sweet in the end!

I figured that a 5.9 wouldn't be that hard to put in there. And I'm lookin for a 4bt but can't find any. I don't think any wrecking yards would have them.

If you cut a hole in the grille for the water pump pulley and put the rad in the back or put a doghouse in like a fullsized van it would probably fit fine.

Otherwise lose 2 for an I4 or gain two for a V8... and V8's can get dicy for length let alone I6's :icon_thumby:

They're that huge? I new they were big motors but damn lol. I've been looking on an off for about 6 months now and no luck. Kinda sucks cuz I thout I would have found one by now.

Well if you think about it, they are six cylinders long. and like 85_ranger said people have trouble fitting v8s in there, and they are only four cylinders long. :icon_thumby:

A smallblock is more like a 4.5 cylinder, the two banks are offset by about half a cylinder so they are longer than a 4 (plus the stupid long water pump that Ford put on a lot of them)

Bobbywalter has a GM diesel (forget if it is a 6.2 or 6.5) and it didn't sound like it fit too bad (I doubt he would have much problem putting darn near anything he wanted to in his truck though so don't take that as gospel) The IH diesels are about the same as a big block so IMO count them out from the start.

I wonder if one of those Jetta diesels would work? Or would it not have the same potential as a 4bt?

vw diesel will have less torque, so you will need more rpm, which they like... but you won't have issues with weight.

you don't need 350 hp. with all of the torque a 4bt diesel puts out. you will be lucky to keep the tires planted stock... bump the timing/fuel and boost and you'll shred your tires. even if you have all 4 locked up...

the 4bt weighs about 750lbs + so you will need to trade to stiffer front springs and shocks with more control, plus a larger sway bar.

drive like you have a soft boiled egg under your foot and you can get over 40 mpg with factory drive components.

if you have a lead foot....use a full sized pu transmission, drive shaft and rear end or you will be replacing them later... you have lots of torque and if you use it, you will break the stock drive line..

you may need to fab the oil pan to make the engine fit and you will probably end up with a hood scoop or hump...

another option. http://www.proffittscruisers.com/engine-conversions/diesel-engine-options.html
lots of info on the little 3.3 or the more common 3.9 4bt which is the engine most people are using, due to low cost of recycled delivery vans...

The Jetta motor was just an idea but I really want the 4bt and as far as the power goes its not that I need it more of I want the power. I don't plan on runnin stock running gear.I plan on running 3/4 to one tons with 37's plus a diesel hot rod would be kinda cool.

350HP is a lot of power out of a 4bt.... Hope you've got deep pockets.

A 350HP 4BT will probably be putting out 5-600 ft-lb of torque... geared right, that will smoke most muscle cars out there.
