Im in the hunt

Dont use a marine engine, they dont work well in automotive apps. IIRC they run hot on the road. They normally have an ocean full of coolant to keep them cool. :icon_rofl:

Here's a brief rundown of a good set-up w/ approx prices:

Get an automotive 4BT
hamilton cam... about $600
24 valve lifters... I paid $25 for a set.
have Brett at Tenn diesel redo your injectors for 50-75HP over stock... about $400.
3200 RPM governor spring... under $20.
Denny T fuel pin... $100.
used hx35 or hy35... $200 or so. (get rid of that baby H1C, at least go with the 6BTs Wh1C with a 12cm exhaust.)
rebuild kit for said turbo...$50.
Intercooler
Fix the KDP.
Tune the fuel pump yourself (theres info all over the web on how to.)

If you keep the cruise RPM down to 1700-1900 (gear it right for your tire size and vehicle weight), with the engine combo above, you should have about 250+HP/400+ ft-lb of torque and still get 30 or so MPGs for under $2000 into the engine work. (I kept the HP and torque numbers conservative, if you tune the pump for more power, it will make more power.... These engines dont know when to give up, they will literally work themselves to death if you over fuel it without enough air to go with the fuel.

Diesel is simple... more fuel= more power. Add more air (or denser air, intercooler), so you can add more fuel without fear of a melt-down.

Old UPS, Chip trucks...big box trucks like that in general mostly have the 4BT's. Plus mated with a 4 spd trans.

I've seen some in a lot of different types of equipment, case backhoes, several different makes of telehandlers, forklifts, etc.

I see what you did there.lol and I could live with the numbers you mentioned.also, as far as the transmission are ther any good automatic setups or is it best to go with the 4/5speed?

Chip truck?

I'm going with a ZF-s542. Go over to 4btswaps.com and start reading. There are a ton of people using autos. Between Destroked and fordcummins you can adapt just about any trans to a 4/6bt (they use the same bolt pattern.) You dont even have to stick with a Ford trans, if you dont want to.

Chip truck... (as shown above) Frito-lay, Doritos, Hostess, uni-first, fed-ex, etc. They were aluminum bodied step vans. (I've never seen a 4bt in a UPS truck, but that doesnt mean they dont exist.)

Gotcha I thought he meant chp.lol

thanks man I'll have to start reading. Can't wait to start getting parts together.:icon_bounceblue:

If only you were closer, there is a guy by me selling 2 for $1000. It is a buy 2 to make 1 deal.

LOVE TAP!:icon_hornsup:

We call them "Cornwell" or Mac trucks around here.

Actually our Mac truck is a repurpsed Frito-Lay truck. Cornhole and Snap-Off have flipnose trucks.

That depends on what your plans are.

What do you want to do with it?
Do you plan to tow with it? If so, how heavy is the load?
Are you running an overdrive trans? If so, what trans?
Is it your DD? Is it a fuel mileage build? Is it going to be off-road only/mostly?
Do you run highways all the time or not very often?
How much power to you want the motor to make?
(go into detail, dont just answer the questions.)

These engines really like to be between 1700-1900 for the best economy. If you're running the highway a lot, plan for that RPM range at your normal cruising speed and base your tire/gearing off that. Above 2000 rpm the mileage really starts to drop off quickly, the motor itself can handle it all day long.

a smaller engine like the south american power stroke (4 cylinder diesel) from a land rover

Sorry, but land rovers did not come with "mini powerstrokes." I know this because my father has a disco with a uk spec 300 tdi engine.

Ahhh, he was talking about the newer rover diesels. Of course i thought he was talking more along the lines of a 300tdi or td5 engine.
