If you had to start from scratch, what 3 firearms?

I'll stick with what I have in the closet and at my side. Glock 36, Ruger 10-22 and a Mossberg 500 12ga. That should cover pretty much anything from bunnies, two legged predators to moose and bear. I would taylor that choice for specific scenerios but if I really have to choose three for everything, those will do.

After reading a few of these I have came to the conclusion that we are a bunch of gun toting red necks. I knew I like you guys for a reason. Now who wants to go Zombie hunting? Who's coming with me man?!?

In most general terms,
1)a 22LR rimfire rifle
2)a12ga shotgun
3)a "medium bore" centerfire rifle

"medium bore" in this case means something atleast as powerful as a 30-30

WHICH specific firearms you choose is personal preference.

My recommendation would be:
1)a Ruger 10-22
2)a Remington 870
3)a Remington 700 in 30-06

that's as basic (and "vanilla") as it gets
(though I must point out that vanilla outsells ALL other flavors combined by more than 2:1)

as usual many replies seem to miss the point, the original question was not what you've got, but what would you choose.

one post mentions a J.C.Higgins bolt action shotgun....

I'll ask (rhetorically) "Where would you buy one new?"

JC Higgins? That's one of those Sears hardware store guns isn't it? I think I finally cut up the last of those I had passed on to me.

I think higgins went out before the sears brand actually went out, I jsut had a sears brand 12 ga bolt action stolen not long ago. Unless sears went to the higgins name, hell i dont know im guessing. It was an awesome gun though.

my picks would be:

Ruger 10/22 .22lr
Remington 870 12 gauge
any form of the AR-15

sears acquired the JC Higgins name and sold many different hunting and sporting goods items under that name. for sheer ruggedness and dependability, they are hard to beat. i have one in 20ga and will be buying another in 12ga next week. plan on taking the 12ga with me on my AlCan Hwy. trip next summer. that will be the only gun i'll be taking.

Yeah, J.C. Higgins bolt action shotgun was one of Sears' "Rebrands".

The bolt action Shotgun in question was actually a Marlin Model 55 and in either
case has been out of production for a while.

Somewhere around here I've got a "Ted Williams Model 73" which if you didn't read the labels
you'd recognize instantly (even in the dark) as a Winchester Model 70 :)

But my go-to rifle is an "old friend" Remington 700 originally produced in 1969 as one
of the very first 25-06 commercialy chambered rifles, three 25-06 barrels later I
rebarreled it to 30-06. I'm about to rebarrel it again, this time to a 24" stainless
steel barrel but it'll stay a 30-06.

on anorther related topic...

Owning some sort of rifle in 30-30 is like owning a Sawsall...
If you are an american guy and don't own both, the almighty
should repossess your balls.

My personal preference in lever rifles is a Marlin.
perversely my only 30-30 is a winchester 94...

When I reach for "my Marlin" it's a 45-70.

alot of guys mentioned the AR platform and made me think whats the best calibers to have in the states as far as easy to get
Rifle: 5.56, .223, 30.06, .22LR, 7.62x39, 7.62x54r

Handgun: .45, 9mm, .40, .22LR

therefor any thing to get is best in one of these correct?

thoughts on that?

Remington 870 express 12 guage, colt python .357 magnum revolver with 6" barrel (you can fire .357 and .38 special rounds, as im sure you all know). and of course a winchester model 70 .243 rifle with dark walnut stalk and 26" barrel.

You missed another important military chambering, the 7.62x51NATO aka "308 Winchester.

But don't simply gravitate to military chamberings, there are commercial cartridges that are nearly as common, 30-30, 7mm-08Rem, 7mmRemMag,
300WinMag, etc...

As for defensive pistols I prefer 1911 based pistols, either Genuine Colt or Kimber...

in a bolt action rifle there is the either the Remington 700 or "everything else"

I can say essentially the same thing about pump action shotguns.

While I still have my original Mossberg 500 shotgun, I also have THREE
Remington 870's........... all in 12ga.

Don't forget that along with commonly available ammo you also want a firearm you can get replacement parts for.

And there simply isn't anything more common than a 10-22, 1911 based pistol
remington 870 or a Remington 700 bolt action rifle...except for cheaply made AK47's.

while military looking firearms are cool to look at and cool to play with,
because of adverse propaganda they are commonly thought of as "evil".

There is little in this world less evil looking than a Marlin or Winchester rifle.

I mean John Wayne carried one... right? (The gun grabbers play mind games, and so will I, but I'm better at it and since perception is a two edged sword you might want to wait a few decades and ask them how that two edged sword felt going up their ass:))

NO, go with the 30 or the 28, they have a lot less issues, the 28 is similar to the 29, only it has less kick, the 30 has more kick, but fires faster and more accurate.
No thanks, I'll stick with 10mm...

correct, the detachable magazine (clip fed) models were made by Marlin. however, the tube fed models were made by High Standard. in JC Higgins model numbers, the model 10 was the 6 shot, long tube and the model 11 was the 2 shot tube completely encased in the forend. they were very solid pieces. their downfall came when some dumb a$$ removed the bolt retainer screw and then fired it with the bolt not locked in as it should have been. sent the bolt flying the opposite direction of the shot. they recalled them and destroyed all that were returned. thankfully, those with knowledge of what had happened elected to keep theirs and not send them back.
