I bought a 94 Ranger, The beater in my Sig. for $600. i did some work to it and got it driveable and running good. The body is pretty rough though, its dented up but minimal rust for Iowa. Ive got about $1000 into it total and an old friend of mine just called me and said he needed a truck asap, like tommorrow and offered me $1200 for it. The body is all beat up but i love the truck, i just bought it so i wouldnt be puting so many miles on my 99 and it was cheap. Should i sell it or keep it??? I dont NEED the money but who doesnt like to have a little extra!!! What would you guys do?

since he's desperate. see if he'll pay $1500. that's a 50% return on your cash.

I wouldn't want you to be MY old friend...

OP, if your old friend really needs a car, don't profit off of his misfortune or desperate need for transportation. He offered X amount, and give it to him for it. What kind of old friend puts someone out because he can for $300 more dollars?

Your 99 is your babe, and it's just a beater anyways. There will be another to come along, probably with slightly less O2 cancer.

well i took him for a drive in it today and the truck started to act up. It jerks the shifter really hard and make several loud clunking noises when you hit the gas hard until you let off. it is worse the higher the gear you are in. The previous owner put a clutch, master cylinder, and slave cylinder in it before i bought. (the clutch wasnt bled when i got it.) I bled the clutch and have put about 50-100 Street miles on it. Any ideas what could be wrong here??
Thanks for the input.

could a loose carrier bearing and bad rear tranny mount do this???
Beef

the carrier bearing has about an inch of play in it. is that to much? i thought it should be tight but ive always had 1 piece D-shafts.

Clunk? I'd look at the u-joints. If he lives close offer to help him work on it and make it better. Experience comes with fixing it yourself!

$28 carrier bearing most definitely. An inch of "play" is not normal and is not supposed to shake or wiggle to & fro.

Two 12mm bolts hold the bearing in place.
Four 12mm (12 point socket) is needed for the bolts for the flange on the differential housing.
Remove slip yoke from tranny.
Dismantle driveshaft. A mallet and 8mm bolts will be useful.
Replace carrier bearing.
It all takes about 30 min to an hour for me (dunno, haven't timed).

The u-joints usually "clunk" when you switch gears or shifts (i.e.: reverse to drive). A bad u-joint also clunks while you apply or exert a lot more force (like if you are driving offroad and trying to climb an obstacle).

U-joints are pretty straightforward w/ he retaining clips.

The rear U-Joints are fine, the front on the other hand are terrible, but that is a different discusion, they shouldnt effect it when im goin straight in 2WD though.

The awesome thing about rangers is. theres TONS of them out there. So yes. give yer buddy a break. If you don't seriously need it. and he does.

RENT IT TO HIM !! Hahaha. but seriously. selling him the truck for little profit is a longer term investment if hes a good friend.

Again, from what you're describing, I'd start there. It's obviously vehicle speed/RPM related.

One the truck is in the next gear, the clutch is just not going to suddenly grab/unbrag the disk/bearing/plate out and cause your clunking.

He didnt really want the ranger he just needed transportation, he sold his truck last night(while i was standing there) He has atleast a week now to find a vehichle so hes not so worried about it now.

But, the problem is getting much worse, i just took the 94 out when i got off work today and drove around the block and it did it almost constantly no matter what gear, MPH, or RPM.

Gonna get a Carrier bearing and go from there.
Thanks guys, ill keep you posted.

if it starts shaking really violently then it stops when you stop and take off again it most likely is the carrier bearing

i got the drive shaft out now, but how do i get the carrier bearing off? where is the shaft supposed to seperate???
