I talked to a mechanic about putting in a clutch kit, clutch pressure plate throwout bearing. I was told they would have to remove the exaust manifold from the engine so they can remove the transmission. Anyone ever heard of this before? My ranger is 2wd 5speed with 2.3 engine, base model truck. Plus the mechanic gave me a written quote of $294 for 7hrs labor and $135 for parts total $429 + tax. Does that exaust manifold have to be remove? Thanks Mike

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have to touch the exhaust on the 4-cyl.

I've done 3 or so clutches on my truck, the only time the exhaust has had to be dropped is when I pulled the engine and did the clutch while I was there... That's not a horrible price, that's about Napa cost if you bought the parts, and I've done it by myself in a weekend, but not everyone can do that...

No the manifold does not need to be removed. The down pipe may have to be removed but I've done them many times without touching it. Just makes one of the bolts harder to get to.

I would get a second opinion

Thank for your help advice, I'll get another mechanics opinion and see what happens. 7 hrs labor to replace that clutch just didn't sound rite to me, I've been told it usually takes 1 person around 4 hrs to do this.

A 2wd ranger pays like 4-5hrs and a good tech can get it done in 1-2

Pull the down pipe dont let any one near those rusted manifold bolts cause you know one is going to snap off in the head, also do the slave and pilot bearing, and find a shop that does a lot of clutchs, also soak the studs on the down pipe before you take it in, so they dont get snapped off, do at least 3x's
