I have a 1998 Ford Ranger with a regular cab. I have an Alpine cde-102 headunit. An alpine ktp-445 plug and play amp and four 6x8 pioneer 4 way speakers. I need a sub though. I listen mostly to metal, so I need a quick hitting accurate sub. Along with metal music comes some pretty intense bass drops so I also need a loud low end. Any suggestions? Remember, I have a regular cab so I'm stuck with about 5" mounting depth and less than 1.2^3 feet of airspace. Hopefully less. Thanks guys.

budget? does the sub have its own amp? if so who makes it and what is the model number so I can look up the specs. What size woofers would you prefer and are you looking for 1 or 2?

Looked these up briefly,http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=299-238&ctab=2#Tabs
and you could either buy a truck box

dimensions seem to fit the woofer, little small on the volume but some poly fill should cover that. The opening might be a bit small for the woofer, you may need to trim i out about a 1/8" radius to get it to fit right. Reviews state they fit it behind the seat of an s10.
Or build your own box if you know how to.

I don't want to spend any more than $150 on a sub and around $150 (hopefully less) on an amp. I'll be building my own box. It'll end up being sealed and I just need one ten. My choice in boxes is pretty limited because the 1998 rangers have that stupid lip thing in the back. I have 11 3/8" maximum box height. Unless I build up and around it.

I might be able to fit that but it's six inches deep. I need something a little shallower.

Anyone else know of a loud accurate, quick hitting 10 inch somewhat shallow sub with a solid low end? :headbang:

I listen to metal alot too, thats usually how I set up my system to go along with metaal music. I have had good luck with 10 inch subs when it came to them bieng punchy and still have that low end. Not sure the mounting depth, but I ran a Pioneer premier 10, they run about 80-100 dollars online, and it was great for metal music. And im not sure on your headunit, but if yours has a low pass crossover setting on it , set it on the highest setting. also use a sealed enclosure.

Also dont associate Pioneer premier with walmart pioneer, trust its not the same. lol Another thing Alpine type e 10 will match your other equipment and those are great too and about the same price as the Pioneer.

Matty: Are you talking about the shallow pioneers?

mtnrgr: Does he listen to metal or rock?

I have a 10 inch MA Audio sub which is very tight and quick. I power it with an Orion Cobalt 500.1 which is only 250 RMS. I listen to mostly metal and rock too. Mine produces Mike Portnoy's bass drum beautiful. They have a 5.5 inch mount depth, but worth the extra 1/2 inch, LOL. They have a cheaper series too which sounds good as well. Put it in a sealed box for the extra punch is what I've heard, but mine is a 4th order bass reflex. Here's my sub:

Might also want to add this is in my Mustang, I need my supercab. Here's a good link for some box building ideas if you're interested:

So far I'm really liking the pioneer ib flat shallow mount sub because I'll probably be able to fit two behind my seats. Unless two subs would sound messy?

As for the type s, I like it but the pioneer is a lot shallower and requires less airspace in the box.

I've never heard of ma audio and it's a little too deep.

I wouldn't mind getting an alpine type s, but it needs a min volume of .65^3 ft. I'm confined to about .5^3 ft. How much airspace is in each chamber?

I'm not exactly sure how much is in each chamber. I know it has a lot of poly-fill inside the box, and they play great to any style of music.

I found a box (and listed it below) that says it can be used with '96-up Ranger single cabs. It's only $20, so I'm not sure how the build quality is, but it says that there is about 0.8 cu. ft. of space. Even though the box seems kind of shallow, I believe a Type S would fit, since it's only 4.3" deep.

Sonic Sub Box: OCFRD01-10

As for the amp, I would go with the Kicker 10ZX400.1. This is a Class D Amp, so it will run cool and not dim your headlights. It's about $159, which is a little more than what you wanted to spend, but you would be saving a little if you bought the Type S (Dual 4-Ohm). This amp supplies 400W RMS at a 2-Ohm load. It fits great under my passenger seat, and I had no problems with installation.

IMHO, I would also get the "remote level bass input" controller. It adds another $25, but this is a must if you play different types of music.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions.

There is no way that box has 0.8 cu ft of airspace inside. Haha.

I bought an alpine m500 amp. 300 wrms@ 4 ohms and 500 wrms@ 2ohms. So no input bass level control for me, unless alpine has one and I don't think they do.

Poly-fill is just the stuff that's in a pillow right?

Yeah, I don't know how in the world they calculated it. My calculation puts it around 0.28 cu. ft.

That Alpine amp was a great choice. Alpine doesn't make a remote bass controller for that amp, but you could get the universal one that I listed below.

Universal Bass Remote

Poly-fill is more of a fiber material than pillow stuffing. For your size of enclosure that you're wanting, a 1 lb. bag of Acousta-Stuf would run you about $10 or so. I have heard some people just use fiberglass instead of poly-fill, but I have never used it before.
