i was driving my truck tonight and i was in 5th gear and when i went to go in 4th i hit reverse and now it wont go in 5th gear no matter how hard i push and if i put it in reverse when i let the clutch out it pops out of reverse. even if i hold it in and let the clutch out it grinds no matter how hard i hold it in reverse. 3rd gear makes a slight grind when i go from 2nd to 3rd and 4th is tighter going in than normal. normally when tranny is in neutral you can move gear shifter back and forth and you still can but when you push it to the right in neutral and get lined up between 5th and reverse it will stay there when you let go and it should pop back in between 3rd and 4th. Any tranny experts out there tell me what i screwed up and how to fix it and a rough price range. Thank you!!!

those transmissions are a dime a dozen in the junkyard...dont bother opening it up. just swap in a junkyard transmission and try not to shift into reverse on the highway anymore :icon_thumby:

How the hell did you get it into reverse from 5th? There's a lockout that doesn't allow the shifter to go directly from 5th to R...

Just out of curiosity, where is that lockout, and how does it work?

To OP: dude, there's firms on Epay that will sell you an (alleged) expert rebuilt M5R1 w/ 1-yr UNlimited miles warranty for ~$550 + 100 shipping... there's several so if one is close you can save the shipping.

But the junkyard route is great too, depending on mileage.

the lockout is inside the trans. you cant go from 5th to reverse without first moving the stick in nuetral past the 3/4 gear row (try it while parked, you'll see).

before you replace it i had an f150 and the first night i drove it did the same thing you did and it wouldn't go into reverse or 5th i pulled the tranny took it to a shop and he said i had burs on the gear teeth from the grind

You must be a really er, "talented" individual to shift from 5th to R at speed. There is a lockout in the trans that forces you to move the stick at least back to the 3/4 line before it will go into reverse. Even if you did pull the stick back to the 3/4 line before moving it back to the reverse gate, you must have been sitting on the shifter to overcome the reverse gear syncro. That syncro doesn't exactly allow you to "slip right in" to R when the vehicle is moving forward at highway speeds.

And you're the guy who wants to turbocharge his ranger? I think you need a little more time and practice with vehilces before you undertake such a large endeavor. Replacing the tranny should be a good start.

As was already said, the junkyards are littered with 2.3 2wd M5OD trannies so you should be able to pick one up cheap. Just put a new clutch in while you're at it.

okay im gonna explain again. i was in 5th gear and i pushed the clutch in and and was going to 4th but it wouldnt come out of 5th cause my clutch was stuck, so i was stupid and i pulled real hard and it flew into reverse, now it didnt actually go into reverse, but it tried and it grinded bad. now i dont know if its supossed to be able to do that but it was like that ever since i got it because i did it when i first started learning to drive 5 speed. now the turbo idea kinda got shut down when blew my tranny cause of all the crap i have to replace on my motor and clutch components. i have the motor and tranny out of the truck and have started replacing the worn parts. i would like to know someones opinion on how long my tranny i just bought will last, it wines in a couple gears i was told.

Well, whining in gears is bad. That tells you that is was run while low on fluid for an extended period of time. That's really the only way to break an M5OD - to cook it by running it low on fluid. If I were you I wouldn't even go through the trouble of putting it in your truck. You want a tranny that doesn't whine in any gear.

If you put that one in there is no telling exactly how long it will last, but a whining tranny equals a soon to be dead tranny. I would recommend that you either find one that you know doesn't whine or have that one rebuilt.

Beyond that, I would replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearning, and slave cylinder while you have the tranny and engine separated. I got all these parts in a kit (LuK brand - the brand Ford uses from the factory) for my explorer for $210 off ebay at a ebay store called "motherclutcherz". The kit for a 9" ranger clutch will be a little less. Replace these parts if there is any way you can afford to.

You'll also want to buy 3 5/8" freeze plugs and replace the rubber plugs on the top of the tranny behind the shifter. The rubber ones harden and crack over time and this is what causes the tranny to leak, get low on fluid, and eventually start doing things like whining and getting stuck in 5th.

But you'll only be better off, albeit a little poorer, for this experience. Now that you've taken the engine and transmission out, you'll know how it all goes together. This will be invaluable knowledge when you do try to do something like turbocharge it.
