I'm probably getting a locker for my 9" with my tax return, but I just had a stupid, stupid idea.
In an open diff the wheel with the least traction gets all the power...Well, what about dual e-brake set up? Each wheel with it's own lever. You could essentially lock the wheel that's spinning allowing power to switched to the other tire.

Sounds like it would work providing enough grab is achieved to lock the tire.

Huh? You with me on this? This is the Mod that will be featured on all the 4x4 magazines! Just you wait and see.

i've had the same idea! but it seems like an awful lot of work to run dual independent cables and levers and what not...

havent farm tractors had dual rear brakes since like day one? to aid in turning?

The 2010+ Rangers actually come with a similar computer controlled setup from the factory now-a-days.


That's why LSD isn't an option anymore.
 
The Ford 500 with AWD. As a demo they would drive the car up a ramp that had 5 feet of rollers on one side. The brake system would pulse the brake on the wheel that lost traction. They would turn the traction control system on and off to show the difference. This is what your talking about.

If your ever in a front wheel drive car and one wheel has lost traction completely you can just apply a little brake. This will force a little power to the wheel that has traction.
 
adjust your rear brakes so that at a slight e-brake tension the main drive wheel(usually passenger side) gets brake friction sooner than the other wheel.
mine seems to be that way and helps a lot when im spinning in mud.

yes. its also a pain because you have to keep them adjusted evenly otherwise when your on the road and hit the brakes (there is usually a locking bar to lock the 2 together for road use) if one is tighter than the other, it will pull to one side. granted most farm tractors do 20-25 mph at best in road gear, but when youve got a few wagonloads of wetcorn or whatever behind you , its like a train. not easy to get stopped quickly.

i have not looked at the new ford system in detail. the older gm units allow push button braking though. i need to work that out better, as its safer then the oem ranger setup modded for manual control.

but the ranger units work fine for 4x4.

Not day one, but close to it.

It is tough to know which wheel is spinning on a tractor with big fenders if you can't see it... which I think would also be a problem on a pickup.
 
Haha.I have a dumber idea, just weld her up! Lol that's what we do where im from, we call it a PP locker (PP standing for Permanent Posi) . Lol
