So I was on my way home from work with the BII, stop at the car wash, stop at the hardware store, noticed nothing off. Came back out from the hardware store and get on the road, noticed a little vibration that hadn't been there before. Figured I'd look into it when I got home.

I was about halfway home when, going about 45 MPH when the vibration got really bad and then all of a sudden went away. I think it went off into the field on the other side of the road along with my left front wheel.

I must say though, for holding the undistinguished title of "worst rollover test ever" the BII handled very well with only 3 wheels. Never felt unstable, never tried to roll. I didn't even have to think about my reactions. In fact the whole time I was trying to keep control of the vehicle my conscious mind was watching the errant wheel bounce off into the field so I could go get it back easier.

An hour later, 4 lug nuts borrowed off the Ranger, and some carefully executed mechanicing I drove her home though. All I lost was 5 lug nuts, one stud, the backing plate, and the bottom 1/4" on the rotor disc.

Now where does one go to get a shirt that says "My Bronco II lost a wheel and all I got was this stupid t-shirt"?

High was just about 34*F today. Tomorrow is supposed to be similar.

I'll be working after dark tomorrow, so I'm expecting high 20s.

Won't be too bad to fix. Same work as replacing one rotor, shouldn't take an hour.

ugh... good job keeping it rubber side down (even if there was 1/4 less rubber on it to keep down...)

Glad it didn't do more than trash a rotor and backing plate. that had the potential of really breaking stuff...

So.........Satan missed another fine opportunity!

:yahoo:

It's good to hear you're O.K> & the truck is fixable!!!!

Must have been on pavement. If you were on gravel or another soft road and that rotor dug in...

Started on pavement. The jacks were in the dirt by the time I got her back on her own feet again.

Will post pics later when I get the old rotor off.

A friend of mine had that happen in his S-10, it's spooky how fast it actually happens. His steering wheel started shaking and about the time he thought "oh shit, I'd better get off the road" , off shot his drivers side front tire. The tire never hit anyone thank god.

The vast, VAST majority of Rollovers are caused by drivers not paying attention and don't have their hands on the wheel.

Holy cow. Do you have skid marks in your pants now?

Glad you are OK though! The parts are minimal compared to any injuries you could have had.

Sounds like a pucker moment for sure.

You won't get a "flippin" T-shirt...because you didn't flip it...

Good to hear you made it through unscathed...

Had the same thing happen to me about 5 years ago...managed to get it stopped and to the side of the road...the wheel was held on the spindle by the flex line...but the spindle nut was sheered on mine so I had to replace the spindle...

You really used up a few Angel angles on that one...:)

Well I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one to have a left front decide to take it's own trip.

My '88 Custom lost one, one morning on the way to work. Fortunately it waited until I was in town, and going from a stop, to go on it's adventure into someone's front yard. This was after the wobbling down the hill next to the 400' drop to the river.

I called work and had someone bring a floor jack, same thing robbed the nuts, but dthis idn't tear anything up to where I replaced it. Just a small flat spot on the rotor, bent the dust guard back, put on the wheel and off we went.

Lucky? Oh yeah.
Cause? Stupidity or intoxication the last time I had the wheels off. Both front were loose . . .

Another reason I'm 9 months sober. . .

Old Ford proverb: There are two kinds of people who drive with both hands on the steering wheel......old folks--------------and young folks with sense.
