A noob question: I'm looking for a white manual 4x4 Ranger with the rear-hinged 2 extra doors. I found a reference that says they started in 1999 with the Supercab. Is there a way to tell from a side photo (or other) that a 1999+ truck with extended cab I'm looking at has opening rear doors? Do all the '99+ extended cab trucks have opening doors? I look for a part line in the rear door area, but that doesn't seem to work. I've been asking Sellers of '99+ trucks with extended cabs and sometimes get answers like 'Rangers don't have four doors'. Are there '99+ Rangers out there with extended cabs that don't have four doors? Any way to tell the difference visually? Thanks.

Not all 99+ Ranger have the 4 door supercab.

Look for the door gap between the rear door and back of the cab.

You don't see it on my 06... because it's a 2 door supercab.

What do you mean by the door gap? I just realized I don't know how to tell either. Here's my '99 4 door for comparison.

Well damn... I thought you could see the gap before the end of the cab. That's certainly not the case.

I'm gonna have to go look at mine to confirm... but I don't think it has the seam by the rear window. In that case it would be hard to tell if it had a topper on the bed.

+1 ^^^

Look for body gap at top of rear door

Also get the VIN, ask for it, the 5th, 6th and 7th "numbers" tell you what style supercab it is
R14 — Ranger 4x2 (2-door SuperCab)
R15 — Ranger 4x4 (2-door SuperCab)
R18 — Ranger 4x2 (4-door SuperCab)
R19 — Ranger 4x4 (4-door SuperCab)

Ask seller for picture of the drivers door "build" label, its on the back edge of drivers door
Has VIN but also other the information on that specific Ranger

Yeah - I'm not clear based on your photo if you can tell at all with the cap in place.

Right, but with the gap on Gump's truck, that seam isn't visible. So is the only thing to go on (without the VIN) the spot in the circle on his?

It's hard to tell with the cap on. You can see it a bit here.

Thanks much for the discussion, I learned a lot. I was hoping there's a magic way to tell, but guess not.

Looks like 1998 was first year there was a 4 door option although there weren't many made

4 door was never "standard" but was included in higher option trims
Ranger with 4.0l engines were more likely to have 4-doors

VIN, or picture with rear doors open is the only for sure ways to tell, lol
And if someone is selling a Ranger and it has 4-doors then they WILL include picture with rear doors open, so no picture like that = 2 door for sure

Yeah... I just looked when I ran a load to storage.

I thought it was actually just before the cab corner... but indeed it is around the corner.

I've come across a new twist. This Ranger, VIN 1FTZR45E05PA49822, is a 2005 4-door 4x4 manual for sale, but has the 5-7 VIN positions R45. That's not on any Ranger VIN list I've found, but it is a 4-door. So there must be other Body Type codes we're missing. The truck is for sale here: https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/4e2e0476-cc11-4447-bc94-805511e6abe3/?
