How's it going, I'm Lew like my username implies. Found an 87 Ranger for $200 believe it's a 2.9L V6. Bone stock. Had a blown tranny and has sat for a few years, but looks clean never been taken out from what I can tell. My friend told me about it because he had a tranny laying in an 86 bronco that has the same engine. So he said I could have it for the Ranger.

Going to pick it up Saturday in the mean time any recommendations for a first ranger owner? Common problems I might find? It has sat so I plan to drop the tank and clean it then flush all the fluids and replace them before I attempt firing it up for the first time.

I have some 31x10.50 and 33x12.50 tires laying around, I wanted to throw the 31x10.50's on. Need to do some cutting it seems like, I'll lift it later to put on something bigger + axles.

Hopefully I can help people out after I get all my newb questions out of the way =) If anyone wants to point me towards something I may want to be checking out feel free to PM me or just post in here I'll be checking back =)

This is my second "rig" since my 86 f-150 seized. I thought about doing a re-build but I wanted to try out something a bit smaller but still roomy. PLus at $200 in such nice shape who'd pass it up. Crossing my fingers that it fires up, I didn't have the chance to turn it over before I got it. The tranny was being removed and the gas smell's like lacquer, but my friend knows th epeople they sound like they just don't want to fix it and they have 5 or 6 running cars sitting in the yard. I was told it ran last time it went under the knife for the tranny replacement then apparently the dad and his kid fought about it and just let it sit.

Welcome to the site!!:icon_cheers:

If it is the stock V6, you are correct, it will be a 2.9. Sounds like a good deal for $200 regardless of what is wrong with it. I don't know of any particular issues to look for on that year model. If I can't try to crank an engine I will usually try to spin it by hand to make sure it is not locked up, & I would check & change all the fluids, but other than that I would bring it home.

Once you get her going & get the bugs worked out, you should have a nice reliable truck. Good luck with your project! :icon_thumby:

Welcome to TRS...many things you can do, but it sounds like you already have a good plan...I'd just get it running and make the mods as you need them...
