OK...so I've been searching for answers on this for about two days now and can't seem to find anything even called a ford dealer and they could only tell me that it had 4.10's in it but nothing about Trac-lock.

So now to the point of this post:
Is there anyway to tell if my truck has the Trac-lock rearend or not? i.e., some code in the VIN that I'm missing, because it has the tow package, or do i have to remove the diff cover to find out for sure?

Just curious.

Jack up the rear end (securely). Spin the wheels, and if they go the same way - it's a traction-lok. If they go opposite, it's an open differential.

Awesome. That's easy enough.

Thanks

Why not just check the code on the differential tag/door tag?

or pull the diff cover to look... and give it some new diff fluid while you're at it.

Go do a burnout and see if both tires spin!! :icon_thumby:

Check the door tag. (thats too easy... do the burnout, its more fun.)

Axle codes don't always tell you.

Check the axle TAG. It will either say 4 10 or 4L 10. The L is for limited slip.

Unless the last guy was ornery like me and left the incorrect tag on to mess with the next guy.:icon_twisted:

Tags will tell you what it came with (either on the door or axle) but to know for sure you are going to have to get dirty. If you can't tell you probably need to rebuild the clutches in it anyway.

When I re-geared an 8.8 in my buddies 'Stang for the 3rd time, He put 5 different tags on it. It had a 2.73, 3.08, 3.55, 3L73, and a 4L10 tag on the bolts. He's always been a little strange.

Well I guess I'll find out for sure in about 15,000 miles. Planned on changing the diff oil at 75,000 or so.

Thanks for all the posts.

That's why pulling the cover or spinning the wheels is the only sure fire way to tell what you've got.

I think I'll start by spinning the wheels first. Less of a mess.
