My 85 rangers brake lights need to be reset, not exactly sure how to do this. Anything helps, thanks in advance.

are they out? replaced the switch under the gas pedal and I have brake lights

I am not familiar with a procedure for "resetting" brake lights. Frankly, I am not familiar with a procedure for resetting anything but the clock on an 85.

What is your symptoms.

I bought it from an army mechanic who is pregnant and just can't fix her up anymore. It's still on base seeing as how I can't drive it off yet. I was told that the brake lights work I just needed to reset them. I've never heard this term before, but then again I'm not very old. My blinkers in the back work, so I'm thinking it must be a disconnected wire somewhere. Like I said, I have absolutely no clue. Is it possible the lights are just out and I new to replace those? Thanks

So...how bout asking the pregnant mechanic what she means by reset? Most common fix/failure to brake lights other than replacing bulbs and the odd electrical connection issue is replacing the brake light switch down on the pedal...you have to adjust it in or out to get the brake lights when you hit the pedal...I can see how a pregnant mechanic wouldn't be able to do that...hell it's a contortion job for skinny dudes.

Check the bulbs or a fuse, Bro. Did you see any error lights on the dash...like 'Brake' light on?

"Brake" light on the dash of an '85 is just for the fluid level, the only "resetting" to it if it is on is to add brake fluid.

Blinkers use the same wire and the same filiments as the brake lights so if they work and the brake lights don't it about has to be something with the switch on the pedal. Not too terrible to replace.

Check the fuse...I bet it's just blown. The thing is - Why is it blown?

If not, then it's probably like others have mentioned, like the switch itself.

I guess she might be talking of either readjusting the brake light switch under the dash. But more likely if she works on military equipment and I'm not an expert. But maybe military vehicles have circuit breakers on the electrical system that can be reset. In our trucks it should be a fuse that has to be replaced.

I don't know about other vehicles, but at least on Tracks we use auto-resetting CB's. They often fail...

How the hell do you reset a brake light?

Oh, ok. I guess it's just been all the JP-8 fumes... Must've overlooked it...

Ok buy a test light then remove the tails and bulbs have someone press the brake and use the test light to see if there is power, if there is get new bulbs if there isn't start hunting for a blown fuse, if the fuse is fine (check it with the test light), then check along the wire till you find a fault (broken wire, chatting, short, etc) if there's no power at all and the fuse refuses to light up the test light, then check out the switch or possibly the flasher relay. Hell you could try jumping the light using a wire straight from the battery to avoid hunting down the wire just to determine the line is unbroken.
