How often does this happen?

I will start by saying I'm sorry for High Jacking the thread here but, my 97 Dodge 2500 360 got -13 MPG at best on the highway and was without a doubt the most expensive vehicle to own for me ever.

This is why I bought a Ranger, my best with the ranger is like 22-23 highway and my average is like 17. My sister had a black Dodge 1500 it was a beast but its not economical she at the best would get like what you said roughly 13. It is a purpose built vehicle if you want something big that can haul then you need it sometimes, but 90% of my driving is to work and back and to friends and shopping, I have a trailer if I need to haul more than what my Ranger can hold. Anyways!, I have the special tool on order it should be in Wednesday so i will take more pictures and continue with my Valve spring dilemma Wednesday.

The hard part is over...

Well I got my tool in, My uncle came over and we got the valve spring out! It was not easy.

And even harder yet we got the new valve spring in.

After getting everything back together we oiled everything, torqued everything back down and turned the engine over to check the compression and make sure everything is set right. we are seeing 175psi so everything should be seated correctly that's what I was reading before hand.

Here is my question, what caused this to happen, because if not properly addressed it could happen again

I know it is puzzling. This is not a normal problem, something might still be wrong but we went through everything trying to come up with some cause and couldn't find anything else wrong. it could just be a manufacturing defect, This truck is just my daily driver I am not hard on it, when it broke I was just driving down the road perfectly normal and then the truck started shaking and the check engine light came on.

I do agree that something probably caused it, I guess I will have to wait until i get the rest of the truck back together and fire it up to know more.

I may have missed this but change the oil before you get it on the road. I doubt anything is in there but it'd be good peace of mind.

Good work on this!

The oil will definitely be getting changed my truck is due this month anyways. I have more work to do I might get to it tonight i will try, I wanna get the valve cover back on get the new spark plugs in and get some cleaning done, and re connect the fuel rail. then Friday my uncle will help me finish the rest and hopefully have it running!

well we put the engine back together and started it up, It ran but it is still running bad there is still something majorly wrong, I dont have much more firewood left, I didn't plan on using the garage this much, so i might have to wait til this spring to work on it further, this is sounding like I need to do a wholle engine tear down.

Update!

I haven't worked on it further yet (too cold) . I got my self a car for now a 2002 Chevy Caviler. I plan to set the timing and put it back together and hope for the best, if it runs fine then I will be done and a happy camper! but if it still doesn't, I have figured out it is cheaper to just get a new motor then rebuilding this one. That should be all for now, within the next month or so, I should know my answer well have a good day!
