How many quarts into an empty transmission?

Recently swapped transmissions on my truck, but haven't started it yet, so the transmission is pretty much completely empty and the torque converter is partially full.

I thought I had heard more than once that an empty transmission with a full/partially full TC takes 7 quarts, then you should start it and check it, and go from there.

Well, I put fluid in my transmission over the weekend, at 6 quarts it was fine, at 7 quarts it was evidently a little too much as it was leaking out of somewhere (the vent I assume, and some came out of the dipstick tube).

Was that too much to add at one time? And how much more should I expect to add?

Would help if you identified what transmission you are referring to. as far as filling an empty trans, you will not successfully fill an empty transmission without running it for a few moments. The pump, TC, valve body, trans cooler/lines all have to be filled while under pressure.

Well it's more or less in my sig but it's a 5R55E and my truck is a 4WD.

I know it has to be run to actually "fill" the transmission, I just didn't think 7 quarts would cause it to overflow.

Does anyone know how much fluid the converter holds?

From above link the 5R55E would hold about 10 quarts dry, so torque converter would probably account for at least 4 quarts if not 5

So yes adding 7 quarts without starting engine to fill torque converter would over flow it.
