Hey, I need to know how many quarts of tranny fluid an A4LD tranny is suppose to have in it so I know how many to tell my mom to buy for her van. Thanks

As much as comes out.

Sorry, it won't be more precise than that. You won't drain anywhere near the total capacity unless you remove the torque converter.

It might help to tell us what you're trying to do.

No see, this van sat for 3 years! And the dipstick was dry, so thats why I ask the capacity of the transmission. Sorry not trying to be a jerk just stating it sat for 3years and its like the tranny fluid all dried up or something, I haven't owned an automatic til about 3 months ago so I'm now learning about them but my 96 explorer has a different model tranny.

It wouldn't just dry up.
It has to have leaked out or the modulator valve has a hole in it and the engine sucked all of it out.

The answer is more or less the same. Fill it until the dipstick reads full with the engine running. However much that takes. A dry dipstick doesn't mean the transmission is empty. Quite a long way from it.

If' it really all leaked out, start shopping for another transmission.

yeah....I couldn't figure out how it would be empty, when they picked up the van a couple months ago after sitting for 3years, they put a battery and started right up, they drove it approx 20miles to their house, the next day I went to move it to see how it drove and all a sudden it was like I had no gears and I checked the fluid and it was empty so maybe something broke internally? Could it be a front seal? I mean I can't give much info til probably tonight when she gets tranny fluid I'll have to start it up and see if I see leaks anywhere. Anymore ideas as to how it could have gotten so low to be nothing.

Well I wanted to know capacity because she asked me how many quarts of tranny fluid she should get for it.
